R.i.P. Tomas 'Tompa' Lindberg (At The Gates) passed away on September 16, 2025

According to several reports, Tomas 'Tompa' Lindberg passed away today as a result of his battle with cancer.
Tomas 'Tompa' Lindberg was born on October 16, 1972, and was a Swedish metal and punk vocalist who had been active in numerous bands since the 1980s.

Under the pseudonym 'Goatspell,' he was with Grotesque from 1988 until their dissolution in 1990.
He became known with their successor band, At The Gates, of which he served as their frontman from 1990 onward. During the band's inactivity/dissolution, Tomas was active in the hardcore band Hide, among others. He has also played in many other bands over the years, including Disfear, The Great Deceiver, and Lock Up.

At The Gates was/is one of the defining and most important bands of Swedish melodic death metal (Gothenburg death metal) since their debut, "The Red In The Sky Is Ours," in 1992. After their fourth album, "Slaughter Of The Soul" (1995), their career ended for a time – until they continued with "At War With Reality" in 2014. Their last release was in 2021: "The Nightmare Of Being."

In December 2023, Tomas was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (cancer of the mouth and palate). A large portion of his palate was removed during major surgery, followed by radiation therapy.
After that, the band went quiet for a while – they made contact in March and again in August 2025 with announcements on their website:

Accordingly, remnants of the cancer were found in early 2025 that could not be reached by surgery or radiation. The vocal recordings were apparently already finished before the final surgery, and a new album was announced.

Now the devastating news came that Tomas 'Tompa' Lindberg had died. May the red in the sky now be his.
Here is the band's official statement in its original version, confirming that he died from the consequences of his cancer, despite all medical efforts:
