The Rite (2011)

 

Watched again today, this absolute icon of pop culture!

Man, Johnny created an iconic five-note motif that, over the years, has become one of the most memorable elements of the film. This melodic fragment takes on a strong narrative function, where the music becomes part of the storyline. On top of that, the score ranges from minimalist and enigmatic moments (20th-century music as a way to evoke complexity and intensity) to grand, majestic orchestral passages (neo-romanticism to evoke a sense of wonder and reverence). It’s a case where Johnny’s musical choices enhance the mystery of the plot and create a sense that the characters, and the audience, are coming into contact with something beyond human understanding, in what could be called interstellar communication, which embraces this encounter with the unknown with optimism (especially at the end)! According to this movie, music can be a universal language, a tool to unite ourselves with beings from other planets.

It’s a real shame this score didn’t win the 1977 Oscar, but the prize for The Omen, by Goldsmith, was a diferente and pretty cool kind of achievement!

Totally agree that five‑note motif is pure cinematic magic. It’s amazing how something so simple can carry such emotional and narrative weight, and Williams really made it feel like a true “language” in the story. The way the score shifts from eerie minimalism to sweeping grandeur still gives me chills.
