Twenty years ago, Richard James, better known as Aphex Twin, planned to release an LP under the name Caustic Window, but the record only made it to a test-pressing and that test-pressing only made it to the hands of four people. According to James Thomas, the man who set up a Kickstarter to buy one of those test pressings and rip it for everyone who pledged at least 16 dollars, the record has remained in their hands for two decades.

Now, however, the entire 70-minute record has been uploaded to YouTube. If you are the rare Aphex Twin fan who doesn't obsess over audio fidelity, you can now listen to the lost LP, for free, as much as you'd like. If, however, lossless is a must, you can preview a few of the tracks, join the 4,116 backers who have contributed a cumulative $67,424, and add the upload of the double-album to your Pono as soon as the CD arrives in the mail.

According to Thomas, who has been in contact with James and Rephlex Records, the label still has no plans give the record an official release.

If I released this under my moniker I would get get skewered and nailed for it. I heard of this guy for years and I still want to know what's the prize with him? Maybe not my type of music not really sure. I expected some soulful grooves I guess.

That's a blanket statement. Not every Aphex Twin fan just eats up whatever he puts out, there is stuff I don't like but I respect him as an artist for his very important contribution to music and there are PLENTY of amazing tracks that he's made. He is a legend in the Ambient, Breakcore, DnB, IDM and about a million other scenes and was instrumental in the acid house movement. Why don't people say that about talentless egomaniacs like Kanye West or some of the other mainstream hacks that have even more of a following? He makes music, you can like it or not he's not coming to your house and forcing you to listen to it.

This is from 20 years ago. Aphex Twin is in fact very soulful. On AudioZ you talk about the roots of house music and simultaneously eschew Aphex Twin. That is a paradox as he was instrumental in the acid house movement.

yes the ambient works stuff is great, yes some trippy amazing videos were made for his tracks

but there is too much of an aura around the whole mess, he doesnt shit gold & silver. and im not going to listen to pink noise bitcrushed & routed through his gameboy because it makes him look arty and special.

I strongly believe that every individual who apreciates music HAS to apreciate Aphex Twin work.
I read somewhere that in an interview he stated that he doesnt belong into the circle formed by boundaries(like music theory etc.) And that means he can do anything.

I feel very happy for coming across Aphex in an early age.
Much respect for this music and this dude right here.
