I think we’ve all had enough of Foster’s shenanigans, new account starting threads about music that secretly push propaganda to brainwash you wild, creative souls into playing music by staring at sheet music. So, let’s talk about how we’re actually listening to music in 2025. I’m still rocking the full-album experience, start to finish, like some kind of vinyl-spinning boomer, tho it's rarely vinyl now.

I get the appeal of the modern single track, Spotify shuffle, instant vibes approach, like how kids do it today. But let’s be real: there’s something about diving into a whole album, letting it unfold like a story, that hits differently. Back in the day, I had my 10-inch phase. physical art, liner notes, the vibes you can’t get that from a digital download or a Limewire rip), but it doesn’t feel hollow like listening to new singles on Spotify like now if you know what I mean.

The big question: Do you still listen to albums in one go ? Doesn’t matter if you’re a self-proclaimed audiophile with a 20k Hi-Fi setup or just streaming on Spotify like the rest of us mortals. I’m curious, are we still out here soaking in full albums, or are we all just chasing the next viral banger?

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room. I’d bet my record collection that at least 70% of you are still blasting the same artists or bands you discovered in high school or your early 20s. You know who you are: “80s Music Is the Pinnacle of Art,” “Pink Floyd Is the Closest We Get to God,” or “Limp Bizkit Was My Personality in the 2000s.” (apologies for not including your fav genre) Look, I get it nostalgia’s a hell of a drug. But when did “new music sucks” become a personality trait ? Some genuinely believe it makes them look cool or something, or worse, better.

Here’s the challenge: Tell me about the best album you’ve discovered and loved in the last two months, released within the past three years or so, by a new artist (newly discovered or simply just new), ideally younger than you.

1. The album and artist
2. Why it slapped (vibes, production, lyrics, whatever hooked you)
3. How you listened (vinyl, CD, streaming, tape)
4. Do you still spin full albums, or are you a singles kinda person?

Well, you’re definitely setting some pretty arbitrary and rigid conditions to categorize what 'new music' is. I think what comes close to me is:

1. The Garden - Mirror Might Steal Your Charm (2018)
2. It's cheesy, it's odd and it's heavy. All perfectly balanced.
3. Streaming
4. Yeah, why not? I can't imagine how it must feel to be a 'singles' kinda person.

I don't know if that fits your definition of a 'newer artist', but it's definitely new to me. I did enjoy my share of fresh music in 2024, like Chat Pile's "Cool World", which was my favorite. But honestly, I've spent most of this year making music (my band’s next album is coming out next month) and studying, so I need to catch up.

As a Bauhaus and Peter Murphy fan, I know what to expect from him. It's his eleventh album. I haven't looked for a band I like in years. I started the search a few years ago because I didn't want to subject myself to any more of that crap. I have enough music and no need for it anymore.

1. Funeral Mist - Deiform (2021)
2. Production is good, better than other FM albums, but it is mostly the way music is composed, it's very sophisticated and full of surprises. And the way the album functions as a whole, each track being perfect and blending perfectly with the next. The general atmosphere too.
3. flac files on my computer / mp3 on an usb stick on the living room stereo. I hate streaming.
4. I almost only spin albums. There are good songs, good singles but albums are where it's at. Vinyl and tapes were the only way to listen to music when I was a kid (there was radio, of course, but music I liked was rarely aired). I hated to have to get up to change the record, so it was often the whole side at once.
These days, most recent music I listen to is Black Metal and Doom Metal, where catchy songs are rarely a thing and often work on the long term. Songs in these genres dont follow the verse/chorus structures of pop music most of the time.

If I hear a good song, I want more of the stuff, so I go for the album. A few years ago, some rapper catched my ear. I downloaded an album, which was in fact a compilation, as tracks had originally been released one by one. I was so disappointed that the hard hitting tune I liked so much was an isolated thing and that most of the rest of the record was elevator music.

I didnt take into account the "last two months" thing.
I jumped to Funeral Mist because this album is relatively recent and is a masterpiece in my opinion.

So, to fully comply with the parameters of the thread :
1. Hate Forest - Against all Odds ( 2025 - released in april, but I became aware of its existence this morning)
2. The 'caught in the snowstorm', despaired and angry feeling that post-2020 Hate Forest albums bring. The blend of melodic guitar work and sheer brutality. It can work only as an album as atmosphere is the most important thing.
3. "I hate streaming" is a bit exagerated. It's useful to quickly discover something but it is not a way to truely listen to music, the same as radio before. When I post a youtube video or bandcamp link in the "What are you listening to now" thread, it's for sharing. Nine times of ten, a CD or flac version is actually what I'm listening to.

 

hmm...younger might be tough....also artists i havent heard of prior, i listen to a lot the new albums released every week and have for most of my life. imma go with:

1. Los Thuthanaka by Los Thuthanaka (2025)

2. i havent heard anything like this, so it challenged my ears. its just very creative and fresh sounding, like most stuff thats fresh, it wasnt easy for me to understand at first which is rare for me, so at first i was questioning whether it was good or not, though i liked it, it challenged and expanded my taste more. its like very abrasive and lo-fi but it has like this mixtape quality thats hard for me to describe and it mixes like all these different genres together, despite that its very cohesive as a project. its unhinged and seemingly chaotic; but the more i listen too it; its very thought out and fine crafted. when i found it i felt like i was listening to something new, honestly i think its genius

4. both, singles are helpful in me deciding if the album is worth checking out when it comes out; i can usually tell the quality of the album based on the singles as well, sometimes ill get surprised but rarely these days. though albums will always reign supreme, releasing a great body of work is a whole different level and really separates artists​

Unfortunately, I've become really jaded with music, which is actually quite worrying.
Nothing seems to float my boat anymore.

It doesn't help that I no longer have a span of attention, and things I do listen to, or even stuff I loved years ago, I can rarely make it to the end of a track, much less an album. I'm also spending less and less time being creative.

Music has literally been at the very core of my universe all my life, and now? .... it almost feels that I've figured out the essence of how it all works & outgrown it, that's the best way I can describe it.

Hopefully people will offer up suggestions that will refloat my boat, because everything new just seems so genrefied, cliched & stereotypical nowadays. I'm sure there is amazing music out there, just it's hard to find.

I did some parts on an album overseas which reminded me of Al DiMeola.
I remembered listening to this album and being blown away about how ridiculously good and articulate the guitar playing was for 1977. Jan Hammer's moog playing and keys are also great.
So I relistened. The guitar playing is still great today by any standard, the execution in places is exceptional.

2. Melody, harmony, vocals, production too - just can't get enough of it, get myself drugged for hours on end, even more so with their first two albums, which I discovered through recommendation by a friend.

4. Both, although generally the newer the album, the less likely that I'd have it on my drive.
Singles on the other hand, from the '50s onwards, all decades equally represented.

 

Everything by Misleading Structures or Kloob (found on bandcamp). However, I understand that this genre of music is definitely not for everyone. Most people I play it for think it's boring or look at me like I'm insane, but I love the music.
I hear all kinds of undertones and harmonics in the compositions which interest me.

Why i liked it: modern interpretation of classic boricua genres as salsa, merengue, bachata, rumba mixed with pop genres like hip hop and reggaeton. amazing themes and lyrics and mixed by a monster called Josh Gudwin. It got me full of reference tracks as well.

I go for full albums almost always if an artist that i like make full albums. There are a lot of new artists that release only singles and EPs.
