Can y'all help me understand Teezio's approach when mixing, I’ve watched a bunch of videos where Teezio breaks down his mixing process. One of them shows him mixing a track completely from scratch.(Here's the YouTube video for reference) (
) Something I’m still not quite grasping is how he decides when a sound is too dynamic. I noticed he uses the MetricAB plugin to check if the kick is still too dynamic, but I’m not sure which meter he’s actually looking at to make that judgment. Watch min 3:30 to see what I mean. From watching that video I also realized that he starts working on the kick when it's very close to clipping, he uses analog hardware, does that have anything to do with his gain stage?

it's not analog gear related. it's a drum machine kick and he seems to notice he has the compressor reacting to it too much for what he wants to see, so he adjusts the compression ratio and changes the threshold.

I've never seen a video before where someone uses Metric A/B, Soothe, Pro-Q3, and Neutron to setup a kick drum. And a clipper.

Haven't watched the video, but just reading this sentence is already insane. I only do EQ and saturation on my kicks these days.

It's the kick drum track without any other channels playing, and within about 1 or 2 minutes of the video footage, like a plugin endorsement list. Maybe something needs all that stuff somehow, but it comes across more like a Jaycen Joshua MWTM video with time compression.

lmao. that is pretty ridiculous. I can understand using one or two, but all?

I forgot the Fabfilter Pro-C2 instance. At 4:20 they realize one of the plugins has auto-gain function enabled. I can't answer the original question either about which he is looking at to say something is "too dynamic". I'd be looking for another sample or a Kick3 instance before using almost $1000 worth of high cpu-usage mixing plugins over a kick drum.

Judging from the changes and his repeated meter resets, it appears he's aiming for an integrated loudness below -14 LUFS, which is quite unusual. The meter currently shows around -13 LUFS, suggesting he intends to compress the peaks with a fast attack compressor to achieve a slightly lower peak value.

His thought process might be that by keeping the kick drum below -14 LUFS Integrated for a brief section, he can achieve a specific loudness target for the entire track when it's played in context with other elements. While I don't believe this is an ideal way to begin a mix, in genres where loudness is crucial, perhaps it's always better to consider it early in the process.

This isn't how integrated loudness metering is typically used, at least not according to its intended function and calculation method. Integrated Loudness is designed for overall, full-track loudness calculation, often involving gates that only include sound above a certain threshold. This makes it impractical for mixing (assuming one is still working at normal mixing levels) plus only short passages of a track are fed for the calculation.

but if this works for him, then it works.

It's not beyond belief to me that he has a goal in mind and a sound in his head before he begins and holds the thought throughout the process.

fairly normal actually... then on a drum bus another compressor catching that last 1-1.5db, a pultec, a saturator(blackbox)
personally I don't like the sound of neutron processing on most drums but he makes it work well. my goto setup is very similar but with fab filter pro q 4, pro c2, Zulu, clipper

One thing about Patrizio, he mixes rather hot. his mixes often hit -8lufs to -7 before mastering but can't argue with the sound of a lot of his records. most of my masters are around -7 to -8
