I am aware of the dbwbp synth ROM archive having a BOATload of dumped synthesizer ROMs (obviously of both the PCM/Operating System related ROMs), however there just doesn't seem to be any that pertain to the PCM waveROM that's found in the Yamaha SY99. The reason I ask, or at the very least am willing to open up a search of the ROM dump is because of the now upcoming SY99 emulation by sheaf called SWAY (KVR has a forum started by sheaf going on about the development status of SWAY), and it can make use of those very ROMs.

The closest things I've found to viable ROMs/audio samples are an entire track of the SY99 ROM streamed on SoundCloud, and on dbwpb: a waveROM for what seems to only be the rhythm section for the SY77 or something.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Though, hopefully once the sister site catches word of SWAY, once it's released, whichever willing distribution team/individual will be able to pack in ROM dumps without needing to go on an Internet safari to look for them!

 

I have only all commercial floppies img(s), because there was a time when I was thinking to mount an usb drive on my SY99 over the now gone floppy drive.
Then (soldered!!!) batteries gone, then display backlight gone, too much work, it would take months of work to revamp it, so for now is frozen.

Interesting this SWAY, I hope it's not just a library Falcon-style.
However SY series are far more complex than DX (see Dexed emulation), real emulation is a huge effort, hope they'll make it.

Which might even be illegal to do.

 

The SY77/99, along with the EX5/7 is one of those unicorn synths that so far have never existed in plug-in form. So very interested in ”SWAY” (first time hearing about it). UVI has done a library and I think there’s a library of 99 in Syntronik, but they both kind of suck. The synths themselves were like the Montage, a combination of FM and samples - but not as simple as that IIRC.

 

You're in luck! It's actually going to be a legit emulation using the whole SY synthesis engine as well as the specialized FM synthesis. As a matter of fact, I believe it doubles as a Sussex library/editor for the real hardware! Here's some more info

I'll be honest, while I don't know my whole know-abouts with making ROM dumps, I personally believe the preservation and availability of hardware/software that's not being sold or distributed by the OEM anymore (even by proxy through music equipment stores, brand new) should be the exception to the knotted up mess that is the DMCA, or whichever act ROM dumping could correlate to.

Best case scenario would be that SWAY gets the same treatment of VirtualJV on audioz, where they'd bundle ROMs that the original software developer wouldn't (obviously) bundle with the emulator.

 

Many synth manufacturers do not like 3rd party emulations. Maybe they want to keep their options open to make one in the future, or they do not want someone else making money from their intellectual property. They could even hold the old mindset that emulations cause prices for used originals to go down (they don't).

None of that means no-one hasn't already done it. They probably have. Maybe you could email the guy who owns that db site and ask. Maybe they already did them but had to take them down. However, not everyone has the mindset of buying a hardware unit and ripping it to samples to share with the entire internet for free. That is like some "unboxing video" on youtube where people buy stuff they can't afford, make a video, and then return it the next day.
