I have no knowledge where to start or what sounds good and no nearby stores that i can demo so am willing to buy based on recommendations and see where that gets me. If possible I am looking for really good sounding headphones, not necessarily flat freqeuncy response for mastering etc like a good pair of monitors like krk
more like the headphone equivalent to a good hifi stereo system if that makes sense. Of course headphones for mixing would be considered if recommoned highly though.

For this price range The "Shure SRH 440" is not bad at all. A little bit focused on the Bass but overall good Headphones for mix downs etc..

    cheers

Thanks, again whats most important is that they sound good, not for mixing because it has a flat response but sounds good for listening purposes only

To be honest, it is best to compare at a music store. Only your ears can you confirm what you are looking for, but like I said: SRH 440 is not bad, even if you only hear CD's with it.
More expensive but also better are the AKG Series,

tricky one, but if you are mastering then they would need to be pretty flattish, in which case there's some industry standard ones like beyer dynamics dt150 or akg's
but some people think an open type is better for the job
All I can say is akg's, beyer dynamics, sennheiser and sony even make decent phones but you'll always need monitors to check mix's on
I like dt250 for tracking as I get a pretty spacey sound but maybe not good for referencing and etymotic ear plugs for critical listening but plugs need cleaning and filter changes a lot.
best budget ones are probably beyers and audio technica but you really do get what you pay for and I wouldn't want to influence your choice as everyone's ears and head physics vary and it becomes a very personnel choice

I forgot to add even if just listening to cd's flattish response is still a good thing as you'll get less ear fatigue, be able to listen longer and still be able to hear a good sound near what the producer and master engineered wanted it to sound like, tone controls and graphic eq's will do the rest for you.
    good luck in choosing

KRK 8400s, closest thing to taping near field monitors to your ears.
AKG 240, they're a little less precise with frequency response but their stereo imaging is fantastic.

Interesting, I think I saw something similar at wal mart and had a listen and they sounded pretty decent, but I don't have lots of experience to compare them with others.. How would they compare to the Audio Technica ATH-M50x or others listed here in your opinion?

I'm not familiar with the sound of the Audio Technica ATH-m50x but the brand is solid for sure & not familiar with the others mentioned in this thread. You can't go wrong with either but it all comes down down to YOUR ears, music you'll be listening to & budget. Here are some reviews of both hope this helps... TZ

These are the exact ones I own, use & love *yes* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSbLIwuTb9I

  14. I usually don't suggest, but this time since you have almost no real alternative other than buying before listening...I will also advocate for the Audio Technica ATH-M50x. For the money they are absolutely wonderful and I am 99% sure that you would enjoy them until you have an extra 300 so bucks to go up to the next level. I seriously cannot imagine those Beats edging anywhere near the M50's, although I have not ever listened to the Wallmart offering. So, why not bring along some music that you know like the back of your hand when you go to "that large disgusting place that treats their employees like shit and has destroyed all small stores in the area like an atomic bomb went off in the land of decency" and see if the highs and mids sound anything like what you think that they should sound like in your head. If not, then get the M50's. Presto!

Thanks for your reply and you nearly convinced me into getting them. I will seriously take you up on your suggestion and grab the technica's after I do just a little more research into a few others just in case something else really grabs me.. Its funny, I really would go to wal mart and have a listen but some kind person physically destroyed those headphones where they connect to the ear pieces and they haven't even replaced them with new ones in months :snuffy: Thanks again for all the suggestions

I bought my Sennheiser 380's for 100$ and I've loved those things since I bought them about 8 months ago, also have a pair of HD-25 II's that I got for about 130$ which are fantastic to me too

I like Sennheiser HD280 Pro, very neutral and loud for the money ($99). I'm considering an upgrade right now to a set of HD380 Pros, which is about $100 more, and retiring the 280's as artist phones.

Was just looking at this http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-Professional-Headphones-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B00JZRXWRW/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402987988&sr=1-5&keywords=audio+technica+ath+m50x

Is this FiiO E6 Headphone Amplifier a good option to get, supposively it increases bass?

Also how do the Audio Technica ATH M50x's compare to the Beyerdynamic-DT-880? http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-880-Pro-Headphones-250/dp/B001B1QENY

Just for the record The N-Tunes by Monster are NOT "Beats" even tho Monster does make the "Beats" line for Dre, N-Tunes are a completely different set of cans & sound way superior to " Beats " and cost 3x less.

  21. AT's are 38 ohms and the Beyers are 250 ohm which means (I think) that you might not have as much volume without a preamp (someone please correct me if I am wrong). The Beyers sounded pretty good to me when I auditioned them.
