There's really only two solutions (unless you're adept at *NIX coding and have built your own in house linux stuff) to using what the industry has to offer in the way of production softwares (or hardware even). Windows or AppleOS. The unfortunate fact is that neither of these two are by any stretch of the imagination safe and private for any user to employ in any computing use model. As far as which one is "better" in a use case scenario - that's entirely subjective. Neither solution can be labeled a hindrance anymore. This may have been true a decade or more ago but no longer. That war is over - neither side won. These days it's all about workflow, safety and user privacy.

The public stance that these two corporations take concerning all three of those points are basically that of snake oil merchants. NEITHER system is safe, private, and provides optimum workflow for ANY use model out of the box despite all the hype and false advertising done by the OEM's... The positives for me in the case of windows is the fact that it can be had and authorized cheaply (like 0$) with no strings attached to the OEM and there are many pre-optimized ISOs out there that one can choose from to build a stable and secure system. Plus the optimization can be carried further (by the user) to completely secure a system from the prying eyes of the OEM and the internet. None of this can be said of AppleOS. So you pays your peso's and takes your choice depending on what means more to you.

AppleOS is slicker. The apple hardware is sleeker and more expensive and claims to be more robust. However one is pretty much stuck with what one gets from apple. There are no "choices" when it comes to apple. You get what you get in hardware and software and you're stuck with it. No optimizing, no making anything more private or safer online. Sure, there are some 3rd party products like firewalls, or a/v's that help in that area, but nothing that can reverse engineer the appleOS into a safe, private, and OEM free entity.

Personally, I don't need "slick" or "sleek" and refuse to pay more for it. PC hardware, if you look for quality, will last just as long as any apple stuff. Even with quality factors up, it will still cost less than the same from apple. As far as options with PC, the world is your oyster. You have to separate the good from the bad, but if you employ quality parts, the hardware build you end up with will usually surpass apple in the functionality department, and for less $$. The windows OS being malleable by the end user to fit the desired use model, and being able to be had and authorized for 0$ without tying you to OEM apron strings are positives that, at this point, will never be duplicated by apple. For me, this is the main deal breaker between the two and what has separated them for quite some time and will more than likely continue down that road in the foreseeable future.

As a matter of preference - paying a fucking fortune for an over priced matchbox or hockey puck with a stupid apple logo plastered on it is not anywhere close to my idea of smart person behavior. If you just look closely at those POS's any smart person can plainly see you have zero room for expansion, the appleOS is unable to be de-fuxxed, and if the thing ever overheated or malfunctioned in any way you're SOL in more ways than one.

Nowadays only overweight, pimply teenagers use Windows, mainly for porn and gaming, for everyone else there is iPad and macOS

 

Then I could also say that Mac and MacOS users don't know anything about computers, they pay a lot for a lousy closed operating system and a lousy expensive closed computer and they can't change anything about them because the company doesn't allow them to.
Windows and PC users have the ability to change their operating system as they want, to build their computer with whatever hardware they want.
It's called freedom, it's called Democracy.
It's no coincidence that Windows users are twice as many as
Mac users.... and all of them are certainly not pimply teenagers.

well, the hardware is far from excellent, but at least you like it,
real time audio stack isn't that great either, sure it's night and day difference compared to Windows, but it can't compete with proper ASIO implementation


let me give you just one advice: don't get hooked up onto any OS or DAW, prefer multiplatform solutions and stay independent

Agree. macOS is shockingly garbage-tier software nowadays. The piles of leftover junk after uninstalling apps? - Honestly, that's the least of its problems. The real disaster is dependency management. On Windows and Linux, runtimes and libraries install system-wide or at least per-user. But on Mac every app hoards its own bloated copy. Imagine two apps needing the same 1.5GB Google framework — congrats, you now have 3GB of the same exact crap. "Toast system notifications"... At this point, macOS is just glorified spyware for clueless Instagram moms. Oh, and pro tip: you’ll need to drop $10 on a third-party uninstaller just to clean up audio plugins properly. Yup.

 

just like how portable apps on Windows work - if you want independent software, you need all the dependencies included

if you can't figure out those few system locations of plugins, then go ahead and pay 10 bucks

 

This tracks - it's as I thought. And it's no shade whatsoever to you, just that someone of your generation would've been far less likely to have had the experience with analog gear, or even sequencers or early DAWs that someone older (or of my generation) would've had.

There are two main aspects to Logic, both extremely intuitive to 1) someone who's operated a console (or at least a desktop mixer); 2) someone who's relied on and/or operated MIDI gear extensively through software; and 3) someone's who's edited audio on a computer.

If you've neither of those experiences under your belt, I can see how Logic would not live up to its name. In contrast, Ableton's Live is literally a Millenial era, full on techno-friendly software. I keep hearing it's a great DAW, and I've no doubt it is - it also has a reputation for being ideal for beginners.

And that's where I should end my reply, live long and prosper.

 

I used (or tried) Logic Audio back when it was still on the PC platform and was not impressed. Granted that was a while ago, but then the dev was the one responsible for pulling it from the PC realm not the end users. As you mention above, I was one of those who has "operated real analog consoles", and "edited audio with a splicing block and razor blade"... I also did multitrack cal's every morning on the tape machines, and checked audio paths in/out of the console, etc ,etc... When I finally went to the computer for audio (and video) production I found Cubase/Nuendo (and wavelab for edits and masters) to be more my speed since I was used to analog process and recording practices. Later on when our illustrious witches endowed us with ProTools HD 12.5 I added it to my arsenal as well. Personally I think everyone who is really serious about audio production should get acquainted with analog studio techniques and practices and put some time in on analog gear before going to the computer. Once on the computer with the right audio-ware it all seemed like second nature and in addition a great weight lifted since computers do not require the large amounts of daily maintenance that analog gear does.

someone asked, I'm 53, recording and playing guitar since end of 80's. i released some stuff in amiga times. not for family friend myself not pretending anything, amateur in music, but not newbie, assuming I'm 20 if reallty funny but thanks. and I professionally I know what a piece of OS sh*t is.

if I could put linux on that macair, at least i'd have a package manager but even unlocked bootloader, it's still a hell of a walled garden.

and no I won't return, go ta very good price pretending I'm student (they don't check) and got it 10% cheaper than in EU already. the proc, casing, keyb, trackpad is so good and seem sturdy.I recevied directly from Hanoi btw, they don't even store in the US.
i don't mind going back windows when they'll release decent divers for ARM (not just wating cubase. doing the job..) and ableton compile for ARM too and lower their price of laptop - so it's not any soon to happen.

and i even run windows for visual studio , works pretty good with UTM - I don't want that shady parallels stuff. So why would I return.

I was a Windows user for decades and switching to MacOS took me almost a year to feel at home, not because of the commandline (I came from FreeBSD too) but because of the OS concepts and limitations.
Win 7 was still a great OS and I used both for a few years, but today I'm using Windows machines only when I have to. Win has turned into a bloated dumb*ss OS that just doesn't serve me well anymore. I only have a few Tinyfied Win 11 VMs running for compatibility reasons.
But that's only me of course

Logic is the easiest linear DAW in existence, on Mac or PC. You'd have to go as far back as something like Pre-Sonar Cakewalk to find something more straight to the point. Acid, before Sonic Foundry even sold it. Pre-H20 Cubase SX (the PC one with the Syncrosoft dongle crack they said took thousands of hours) even, to Cubase 3.7.

It's even easier to learn and use than Slow Tools. And let's face it, some of these "AAX?" beggars are not usually the sharpest razors in front of the Otari tape machine. (yeah, right). Yes, we get it. You want to make a point you are running Protools and still don't know how to read the title of a release which shows the included plugin formats.

It's pretty sad people have to come on a site like this one, with garbage like this; when they cannot figure out how to get past the Donate button on Reddit.

 

It’s pretty wild over here. What if I told you I have both a (Windows) PC and a Mac and use them for different things?
Both have their pros and cons. I really like the design of most Apple apps like Logic and Final Cut and I love that I can quickly preview samples or music and videos just by hitting space. I don't know, I just feel way more organized on the Mac. That’s my work and productivity system while Windows is more of a mess-around and occasionally play-some-games machine.

But honestly, Logic is a huge part of it. I’ve worked with almost every DAW: FL, Ableton, Pro Tools, Cubase, Studio One, Bitwig. Logic just makes the most sense to me. The way things are laid out, the shortcuts, the stock plugins, it all fits how I work and helps me stay productive.
