Background info: When I make drum beats, what I've been doing lately, is to arrange audio-clips in the arrange-view (or whatever its called in Logic, where you see the actual tracks), and to not use any midi sequencing. I do it that way in Ableton... but of course, at some point I need to tune the individual samples... which is quite easy in ABleton, just double-click audio-clip and set the semi-tone/cents.... with no warp either.. I don't like using those algorithmic "change pitch but not tempo" / "change speed but not pitch" functions.

If I want to approach my beat making in the same manner in Logic Pro, is there a way to change the tuning of audio-clips that is not some kind of algorithmic-abracadabra bullshit?... For example, lets say you have a sampler, and you have a kick-drum loaded. When you change the pitch of it (or any sound that's in a sampler), what you are actually doing is increasing or decreasing the speed of its playback... just like on a tape-deck or with vinyl. That is the basic tuning I am looking for in Logic Pro... does it have it for actual audio clips/tracks (not midi sequences)??

Ableton is just too impressive for this type of this.

    For Logic there is:

    1) You can use the Function and use 'Time Machine' to alter the pitch/tuning, however this is just so tedious for quick producing. Judging by what you have said, you don't want to operate like this.

    2) You can use a Pitch Shifter built-in plugin. I've seen people recommend this however I find this sounds like complete shit.

    3) Load the sample in EXS24 which is a sampler instrument. The drum hit will be spread across all of the keys and you can find the pitch you want. This is where you will find the best result imo. It's the quickest and you don't have to dick around like you do with Time Machine.

    4) As mentioned above, there is the Transpose in the Inspector window however it needs to be an Apple Loop. I'm not sure about Logic X but in Logic 9 getting this to be implemented on your own audio clips was a nightmare.

As a person who loves and uses Ableton a lot (as well as Logic), I recommend going for number 3 (EXS24). It's the fastest and the EXS24 will emulate your normal tape system so that the higher the pitch, the quicker the playback.

xsze: yeah.. i already was watchin that today!!. got it off pirate bay!!! ha ha

transpose in inspector is for midi though, and perhsps those apple loops.

Abacus: Ableton really is amazing.. out of all the daws ive tried.. it was the most intuitive.. and extremely easy to learn i thought..

Check it out.. so, there is a flex-time option called: Flex-Time Speed (FX).. thats it!! you can change the length of an audioclip (which makes the sample duration longer or shorter) and therefore lower or higher in pitch respectively. However, its not measured in cents/ semi-tones.. so it is kinda odd in that respect.. I'll see how it goes, i moght have to just settle with samplers and midi for logic... i just love being able to have the soundwaves arranged on the screen.. especially when being able to zoom in and shift a clap for example, a bit before or after the transient of the kick, etc.

    thanks guys!! (or gals)??
