Hahah!!! this nailed it! I truly think thats what most asume how anything "AI" is used.

They dont consider.
- Hundreds of generations
- Finding the diamonds within the slop
- Taking small elements from each gen
- Doing all the work we would normally do w/o AI

This is a straw man argument, I never said that. I understand the AI, I know the use cases.

My point is that by using AI you rob yourself out of what really matters. What shapes your own unique style is the journey. By skipping it and going straight to the end result you get nothing out of it.

Secondly, what AI gives you is someone else's performance, not your own. You can't imprint your own unique style onto the end result, because of the way AI works. The whole concept is flawed in that aspect. You don't have the control. You can't even get the same result twice.

Your analogy with pre-workout is once again dishonest in my opinion. Using AI just for the inspiration and nothing else would be a pre-workout. Pre-workout doesn't give you huge biceps. The actual training does.

I play guitar myself and all I hear is flat and soulless performance. If that's what you are after then sure, AI is great for that. But good luck baking a tasty pie with mouldy ingredients.

 

Sometimes I use suno ai for melody ideas , I download the WAV. And check out the notes with ripx or decoda and translate these to Cubase .
I think it's okay to get inspired for something like this , chords or melodys .

You always get inspiration from somewhere, whether it's from another artist or an AI that has made a beautiful melody.

For me personally it's really a blessing in some things , I absolutely can't play guitar and always click it in via midi .
But I love Spanish influenced guitar beats and the AI helps me with that.

 

What about humming a few notes into my phone and making a quick guitar stem for a whole production I have is skpping to the end result? Its just like using a custom sample?

Are you saying I need to devote 10000 hours, buy a guitar, and learn how to play so i can get a few second loop for a genre I dont even make?

So me taking that sample i made and adding it to my entire production is stealing someone elses playing style? Isnt that what using a sample is? daft punk took pieces of others music all the time and created some of the biggest hits by doing so. Their taste was selecting, arranging and adding their sound to the samples. Thats a whole art in itself.

I have been training. I have a 20+ year professional carer even my AS profile is 20 years old!! Just because someone doesn’t train the way you choose to for the genre you create doesn't mean everyone has to.

Im saying its pre workout as in im not prompting for a full song. My sharing of how I use AI is just to show how to use it creatively. People can choose to explore or not. I found something that can help my idea move along while I'm in the creative flow state.

yeah this is a great use too. Another use case is uploading a WIP of a song you’re stuck on, and having these tools expand an idea. I feel like it’s when I colab with an actual artist and they play something new in a way that I wouldn’t have imagined. Sometimes we don’t have a friend to bounce an idea off of.

 

Fuck AI for music, but if you have to, do it, jut make great music, dunno, drunk posting, love you all, 14 years of AS, great stuff, great people.

 

Respect to the OG AS crew!! Once I got over the feelings of threat to my identity and realized it’s another tool in my multi decade toolbox I didn’t hate it as much.

I felt the same way with AI image stuff. Once adobe added it to photoshop I realized it can only deepen my creative output.

First was writing, next was images in this creative AI space. Their implementation is a good roadmap to where this will be for music.

Agree! A tracked guitar, a kick drum sample, a arp preset, iteration through AI can all invoke emotion and propel an idea forward. One doesn’t cancel out the other either.

 

I'm trying to avoid using AI in my projects so I don't become dependent on it.

i already use less tools in my Master Section since i have Zynaptic Balance and Intensity.

Waves Clarity helps me to clear older Vocal recordings and other samples.

Focusrite FAST plugins are also very handy.

What i use is AMUSE 3.0 , Photo and Video AI for graphic design.

 

If a tool helps you get to the finish line quicker. Why avoid them just because they’re labeled AI?

I love stuff like Gullfoss. It’s an algorithm doing the heavy lifting, and that “AI” label shouldn’t turn people off.

If we just called it tech progress, would you still be against it?

Same thing happened with Pro Tools. Tape was a grind, and people thought digital was cheating. Now we use all these tools to work faster and get our ideas down better.

maybe they open up time for you to focus on and enjoy other parts of the music making process

It’s like you’re talking to an industry chef who cooks every day from the perspective of someone who tried to cook once before.

“I used a oven once, and you cant cook eggs in there” “ovens are cheating and ruining cooking” “cooking with pans is better for eggs”

If you want to share an opinion on from a perspective of understanding go explore with the tool. Upload audio of your unique style. Maybe you will realize the generalizations you are saying are untrue.

So you are saying that you are using AI exclusively trained on your own data? Is that what you are trying to tell me? Or maybe the glorified curve fitting tool trained on bazillion of stolen ideas somehow magically doesn't even leave a trace of them in the results it gives you? Which of these two?

You don't seem to be able to wrap your head around the fact that AI doesn't instinctively understand what flamenco guitar even is, the same way you and I do. It needs to be fed a shitload of data, which is, more often than not, stolen. It doesn't matter if you provide the unique input, the output will never be fully yours. It will always be tainted to some degree, because it's derived from that data. Industry chef, my ass.

Also, stop putting words into my mouth and using ad hominem attacks. It's annoying. Try using actual arguments, you know, other than "me good, you bad".

Same here, I think a lot of people aren't clarifying the different types. SmartEQ, SmartLimit etc also are good but they still allow for complete manual override.
A.I where you can still change the settings and do it manually I believe a majority of people have zero issues with. It's more the A.I. where the user input is overridden completely without alternatives that most have an issue with. Primarily because there is no say in what they are doing.
I get your point completely and it's valid, but unless you're an advertising company that doesn't want to hire a musician to write it and says "Give me a pop music TV commercial for cars", then composers will always want to have some form of control over the output.

 

Yep! I think most people think when those 2 letters A & I are anywhere near each other they assume you are just doing a version of this "Give me a pop music TV commercial for cars" and calling it a day.

 

In truth, we have managed very well without AI (artificial stupidity) for the past few decades.
Now, AI enthusiasts and those who will make money from it will want to manipulate us daily.

 

Ive openly shared free tools like Replay with this community, along with numerous examples of creatively harnessing AI. Often skepticism towards innovation says less about the technology and more about our own discomfort watching others confidently embrace what we hesitate to explore
