Talent : people who are sexually attractive:

There was plenty of talent at the party last night.

Everyone has a different perspective on it, even Cambridge.

All kidding aside, yes you need something like natural abilitiy.

But the most important point is that you can discover your natural ability also by learning and being taught.

    I actually do.
Unfortunately, I have as much of talent as I have of laziness.

So often the case. In fact, there's another reason people like Madonna make it. Most of the time success is less about talent and far more about getting off your ass.

    Origin of Talent:

1400-1500, unit of weight or money in the ancient world, from Latin talentum, from Greek talanton; from a story in the Bible in which a master gives talents to his three servants, and two of them use them well and the other one is punished for hiding, rather than investing a bag of talents in the master's absence. The interpretation of this parable to mean that you should not hide your talents you possess.

Oh, I'm a genius when it comes to laziness.
Lazyness aside, I think I've ran out of confessable talents.

There are IMO two sides to this: musicianship (playing) and songwriting (or composing, or producing, or arranging).

In terms of playing my instrument (piano & keys), I think I am. All my life, I’ve rarely needed to practice, I’ve just played. Even jazz (I even got into a ’Whiplash’ style hardass jazz music school with this approach…). I think I have perfect pitch, so that definitely helps.

Now - if I had the patience to actually hone my craft, I would get way better as a musician. Especially as an improviser. Now I’m kind of stuck in the same place, because of laziness.

Also, some truly gifted musicians can pick up pretty much any instrument and do the same thing on each one. I don’t think I can. For instance, I’ve got a great sense of rhythm, but playing an actual acoustic drum set is tough. Some hand-eye coordination thing isn’t coordinating.

In terms of composing/songwriting/producing, talent = creativity in my opinion. And that can be a gift some either have, or they don’t. I know some people doing creative work, who in ny opinion aren’t really that creative. This field is also something that really benefits from two things, listening (= your influences) and a formal education. I don’t know anyone who knows music theory from birth - but knowing the ins and outs of it will definitely have an impact on your songwriting, especially when combined with ”talent”.

I used to think it's a stock market parable for us slaves to give our money to rich CEOs.

All the comments I've looked at seem to assume that talent is binary. You have it or you don't.The op did mention musical talent. I would argue that there are degrees of talent. My personal one is to be able to busk any song that I have a reasonable familiarity but have never played before with an the acoustic guitar playing chords while usually others sing. Its not a great thing but goes down well at family gatherings etc.I suppose this gives me a bit of a head start when putting chord progressions together for my own stuff. This came naturally from an early age and has enabled me to play with real musicians in bands all my life.

Well, you have to give young people the opportunity to learn about instruments through play.
The kids here all love to sing. Later, when they get older, all that innate playfulness simply fades away.

They then become internet consumers and see what others can do and how well they do it.
That's not helpful, it's discouraging. I can't do that anyway, so I'll just leave it alone.
Many can sing but don't have a voice that resonates with people, and therefore won't be successful, but they sing...!

In principle, the people who build the instruments don't even appear in these forums. Without the extraction of raw materials and the planning, implementation, and sale of musical instruments, the guitarist or pianist can't do anything.

I believe that talent is learned and practiced. Rarely a baby comes out the womb having innate ability for anything, it's all learned.

Also, a lot of which might be considered to be talent is just confidence, look like you know what you're doing and people will probably believe that you do

I have high standards for the songs that I write, the music that I compose, the poems, my paintings and those pieces which I've sculptured in clay. I won't share anything that doesn't make my quality cut, and if other artists and craftsmen whose work that I respect and that I feel are true to their vision reciprocate and can critique my output both intellectually as well as figuratively, then I can feel secure in my own worth and talent, something which in the early years was not the case.

No. I don't consider myself talented. This is something that took me some years to come to terms with. It's ok now. Then again, I don't consider many of the big names in the music industry (artists and engineers) to be talented either.

I write music only for my family and friends. So I don't need to be talented, they will like me anyway.
