Another reason most people will pick the 8080, and why they can generally cost quite a bit more now; is because the 8080 has rack unit build quality.

 

Just get an SH-4D. Completely different filter, but it has the SuperSaw AND the Alpha Juno PWM Saw in it, not to mention this was Roland's first attempt at a 'virtual analog'. Even the ZenCore modeling in the SH-4D is quite beyond it.

 

Anyone have thoughts re. the tiny Behringer hardware emu of the JP-8000?

BTW - I think the SH-32 was Rolands' 1st foray into VA hardware boxes.

 

Just because they market it as such, doesn't make it so.... cause it aint. It's a Mutable Instruments Braids oscillator with an ok analog filter slapped on it. When it comes to B, good rule of thumb... was the og built in the 70's? Probably a genuine attempt at a clone. Did the og have any complex digital systems? Not a clone/emulation despite the marketing (all those miniboxes, the ob thing, etc).

If you buy one make sure the filter potentiometers arent crackly, which is a common occurance with well used keyboard units, not sure if the rack suffers the same problem im talking bout the jp 8000 i will sum up the sound with one word too "Anthemic"

It's a generic software based synthesizer in a tiny box (a synthesizer for ants!) that doesn't emulate the JP in any sort of authentic way.

 

I highly doubt it considering it came out after the JP8000 was discontinued.. I guess the SH-4D is a ZenCore thing sort of. Not quite clear on that but it sounds good.

I think the D50 was the first big digital, it was sample based but the rest of it was all basically ancient VA tech hehe.The JP was their answer to the Nord Lead/Virus/etc. For some reason nobody I knew liked them, they all wanted the Nords or Virus or the Waldorfs.

I still have trouble believing that buying the JP-8000 hardware (these days at premium-plus pricing) for the so-called "super-saw" is not a fools errand. The "super-saw" is just a detuned brass patch, is it not? ANY synth on the planet (soft or otherwise) with more than one oscillator on board can duplicate this sound. I really don't see what the big deal is.

 

I can tell who has and has not read Adam Szabo's supersaw thesis.

 

The term SuperSaw is used to describe a synthesizer waveform consisting of several layered, detuned sawtooth waveforms.

The term "SuperSaw" was first used by Roland in 1996 for a new waveform on the Roland JP8000 synthesizer and was registered as a trademark.
Since around 1999, (usually garish) SuperSaw sounds have been of great importance in the styles of Uplifting Trance, Hands Up, Hard Trance, Hardstyle, and Hardcore Techno (in the slower mainstream style).

Along with the sounds of the Roland TB-303 and Roland TR-909 devices, the SuperSaw sound is one of the genre's defining sounds. The SuperSaw is also used in newer crunk/trap, brostep, and dance music (in Germany, also with a Schlager influence).

Comparable waveforms are also used in synthesizers from other manufacturers. The Recklinghausen-based company Access Music Electronics uses a similar waveform called “HyperSaw” in its “Access Virus” synthesizer series.

Supersaw

The Supersaw waveform is an emulation of seven mutually detuned and modulated sawtooth waves. It's ideal for programming fat, radiant lead and pad sounds and is now considered a classic. Competitors such as Korg's microKorg XL and the Virus TI also feature the waveform.

Software synths from Vengeance or Lennar Digital's Sylenth, which are essential tools for EDM producers, would be unthinkable without Supersaw. Roland has also implemented the Supersaw, which allows for the creation of high-calorie fare at the oscillator level, in its subsequent products (SH-201, Gaia, V-Synth).

You're gonna sit there and tell me that any synth (soft or otherwise) that has an adequate number of oscillators on board that can be detuned and processed (which pretty much includes almost every decent soft synth to come down the pike in the last 5 years or so) are incapable of producing the exact (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) same sound(s)?

The supersaw is not simply a bunch of detuned saws and unison modes will never achieve an authentic sound.

With the exception of the JP6K, and the Arturia recreation, few software synthesizers give you the control that allows recreating the sound realistically. Yes you can do something similar in Reaktor, or one of the more powerful modular synth environments, but this is hardly "any synth".
