Yeah, he's an entrepreneur, so turning Scaler into a DAW probably seemed like a good idea at the time

 

Scaler 2 burnt down my guest house, when the software was left running overnight.

Killed all the fish in the aquarium when I rebooted it once.

I actually had it make my garage door openers cause the garage doors to dance.

IT destroyed the Etruscans, rendered my dog sterile, spoiled all the food in the refrigerator, set my favorite japanese maple tree ablaze, caused temporary urinary incontinence in my horse and myself. Made all my hair fall out, left several soiled spots in the carpet. Switched the salt and pepper contents in their respective containers and once substituted a minor 5th for a major 7th.

I was promised it would all be resolved in version 3, but truthfully I'm scared to even download it at this point..

Friends, just wait for the upcoming updates — Scaler 3 still needs a bit more time. Once you get used to it, using it will feel very simple. The arrangement section is quite successful. Use "Chord Follow" to track the chords, mute the main chord section, slice the chords you’re following with Chord Follow, and use Innervision. Give each chord a different flavor. And that’s just the beginning — there’s so much more. Just explore it and spend time with it. But as I said, it still needs a bit more time; I don’t think it’s at its full potential yet. After a few good updates, everything will probably be just the way you want it.

 

Depends who you ask but for someone without any background in music theory (like me), this is a great tool.

Could be easier and more intuitive to use but that's a different story.

Scaler's dev team deserves some kudos.

 

"Easier and more intuitive" is the reason behind the thread. It's going in the opposite direction, trying to be everything for everyone. I'd think with his background in electronic music, he'd make a secondary lighter version of it. Like Seqund, almost. His plugin DC Snares is great.

It confused me at first, but the colors tab i do like. you can have 5 rows of different voicings, variations etc that can each have their own octave setting. It could have done without a lot of the wannabe DAW stuff, but i think they came to a crossroads where they realized they needed better arrangement editing, but keeping the old layout it would have been half-assed.

 

100% agree, for a company with about 17 employees they have done a fantastic job

 

I don't hate it except for the amount of clutter and some really fucking annoying issues (like muting the tracks and they STILL PLAY). Drives me nuts.

This is probably the buggiest software I have ever used. Was using it last night to make some arpeggios and then it bugged so hard it crashed Studio One, then I tried reopening SO, crashed while loading, couldn't close it from task manager, and then finally when I went to reboot, my drivers crashed and the PC blue screened. Never had a blue screen before on that PC and interface since 2023. Cool shit!

Btw, any recommendations for an arpeggiator that is "smart" or has a ton of presets?

 

Using scaler or chord generating plugins is to music what Luke Skywalker using the guidance system is to Star Wars.

IE if you can destroy the Death Star by using the guidance system, but it'd be a lot cooler if you turned it off and blew it up manually, ie played in the chords with a keyboard.

for me -somewhere back in version 2, Scaler lost the ease with which you could try out a few ideas.
It got bigger and fatter until you couldn't see the forest for the trees if you only used it from time to time. Stopped using it.

That seems to me to be a typical approach of programmers today. They seem to think: "There must be a way to be able to squeeze 150 more features into a one-page-tool somewhere!"

Most software gets ugly over time...

Usability should be tested for every interation of a software: place a non involved person with mediocre knowledge about the function of a software title and see what happens. If shit happens blame the programmer not the user.

The programmer is responsible for creating a UX in such a way that a user can handle it without much training.

 

I'm completely happy with all of that shit except the salt and pepper swap. That's just fucking evil, man. I agree that he should be killed. Or fired. Or jolly well told off.

 

a big part of this is "update culture" of users, and their requests. People "Wait for the new version" before buying software all the time, even though they would just get free updates and new versions. Users complain when developers do not implement every halfwit idea people email them. (or personally respond to such emails).

Users (and sagging new sales) drive a lot of this. Most programmers do not want to add 150 features of anything. They thought their product was already done when they put it out there for sale. We can all say " I did not ask for any of this", but usually someone did.

 

You might say to yourself, "Wow, what a piece of software! How easy it has made my job. I press a button and it does everything for me." That's the superficial part. The important part is that by doing this, you are depriving yourself of a deep understanding of music. In the world of music, anything that helps you produce easily should be considered a nuisance.
The creator of this software aims to help you create music easily and without hassle, so that you can achieve your goal of creating a song in the shortest possible time. You have to choose the opposite goal, your goal should be to suffer great pain and hardship along your musical path so that you can learn music deeply through great difficulty. Nothing helps you gain a deeper understanding of music like putting in the effort and time to understand it.
You have to put aside everything that thinks for you from the process of your music career and think carefully about the smallest details. If you don't do this, you will surely regret it in the future and eventually realize that you have seriously harmed yourself.

Nah, I never trusted 'em. They were far too smug.

But being tricked into putting pepper on your chips... I have no words to describe it....

 

If I want to go back to use a simpler/lighter version; which one would y'all suggest?

scaler 2 was/is good, much more simple imo to wrap your head around. not buggy.

i liked pitch innovations eternal arps or harmony bloom by mario nieto. both should be on the sister site, although i bought the harmony bloom cause thats a single dude developing it and at least from his old livestreams seemed like he was really trying. not sure if they apply to what you're looking for though.

lol what a bonkers take, i hope you're either joking or foster. of course there is context to everything but as a blanket statement, its just laughable. "i only use a 4 track and a broken guitar posers!" like half the worlds best audio engineers are ITB nowadays... do you think thats because its more or less convenient?
