You'd think if they've been able to release both the Juno and the Jupiter with Roland's permission, the dams would be open on recreating any and all Roland synths that haven't yet been filled in the software synth wishlist. Granted, while using likeness with such royalties is a superficial, general blanket privilege, there's the more taxing task of paying the piper for technology patents/schematics, even if (I suppose) they're reverse engineered.

While we're on the subject of Arturia VAs, wouldn't it be nice if we could get a remodeled/emulated version of the Yamaha VL-1?

I think anything analog can be digitized, and I think that's what will happen... thanks for your suggestion.

I can well imagine that when Arturia have almost finished producing successful monetizing synthesizers, they will also turn to the last analog and physical synthesizers and digitize them, thus monetizing them.

Yamaha's VL1 physical modeling synthesizer has been considered unique and innovative ever since its release around 1994. Since it failed to achieve market success, it's quite rare today, but its detailed saxophone simulation model is virtually unmatched. The complexity of the model also meant that Yamaha didn't make the internal model parameters accessible to the user. Instead, insiders had the "VL1 Expert Editor" for the Apple Macintosh (68000 generation). It's quite difficult these days to find a 30-year-old computer with a suitable MIDI interface for the modem port. And unfortunately, there's no way to route MIDI communication to a Mac PC emulation (Basilisk).

From today's perspective, physical modeling unfortunately cannot be considered a commercial success. It's a shame that Yamaha only marketed the device as a saxophone simulation. A lower price and a few VP1 model extensions could have won the synthesizer community over the years.

Another reason seems clear to me: far too complicated! The VL1 has over 1,000 (!) parameters, which also act holistically; individual changes have hardly any effect and, in extreme cases, tend to produce an out-of-tune, croaking instrument. You have to skillfully tweak many parameters simultaneously to create a truly innovative and good-sounding patch. And then you really have to devote years of intensive study to it; in times when frustration thresholds are falling, it's better to leave this kind of thing to the Asians.

Yamaha's marketing department had also observed this trend due to sluggish sales and promoted the major operating system update to version 2 under the techno banner, adding a few TB303 basses and distortion sounds to the VL1 – but unfortunately not to the VP1 models.

The smaller models, especially the VL70-m rack version and its various variations, which were available as expansion cards for some Yamaha synthesizers, sound thin and nowhere near as warm as the Yamaha VL1. They are, in fact, just a poor replacement for the VL1 and VL7.

All in all, an incredibly complex instrument with sounds that no other instrument can come close to. If you can find a flawless VL1 today, you should grab one immediately. This unique synthesizer will surely be sought after by collectors and will increase in value.

Man... Thanks for mentioning the complicated, sad history of the poor modules. I thought it sounded amazing- especially the sitar patch. I wanted to recreate some of the instruments using Sculpture but to no avail, sadly.

And now that I think about it, even if Yamaha made a VL-1 emulation, I wouldn't be surprised if they use the ridiculous virtual DSP nonsense they put in that new Montage VST where pressing one key OBLITERATES your CPU's power- audio crackling and popping like a 4th of July crescendo.

Yamaha started out well enough and then declined rapidly. In my opinion, they've completely driven even Yamaha into the ground. One company that's still very innovative is Korg from Japan. ASM - Hydrasynth / Explorer - has been the dominant player in recent years!

Thanks to physical modeling, it was now possible to resurrect the old and incredibly expensive analog synthesizer treasures as digitally reproduced virtual analog synthesizers. The most well-known examples are the Clavia Nord Lead, the Access Virus, and the Waldorf synthesizers.

Okay lets keep this a speculation topic. Feel free to discuss till 24th April. I know more, but i cant tell.

Lets just wait until the 24th April 2025 for the final reveal, then we know more from Arturia itself.
