What is the percussive instrument used at 42 seconds in this song ? Is that even an instrument ? What is making up the percussion in this song. Almost sounds like a glass is used for percussion ?

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to this question, but just wanted to jump and say what a tune!

I also love their track boy from school. That's also an interesting one to look at sonically as well, in my opinion.

 

This is not a standard percussion instrument, but cable tensioners.

 

Thanks for the responses. Do you think it sounds like cable tensioners were actually used or is that just something wacky they threw in for the music video ? Is that a cowbell at the very start at 4 seconds and then again in the chorus near the end at 3:10 or is it something else like a woodblock. He's tapping on something in the video at that point as well, a wooden percussion thing. What is that ?

 

I agree that boy from school has some really nice sound as well pxxo. That funky rhodes/keyboards phaser thing sounds particularly nice in that one.

Almost certainly not, they have the combination of a rattly chime hit with a pitched up cowbell hit put together to make a unique enough percussive sound. Cable tensioners wasprobably just used for comedic effect in the video.

 

Actually he hits a maracas rattle with wood.
