The error usually occurs beforehand, you should always pack keygens with WinRar, while you burn them you should run all programs and not surf the Internet at the same time.

It is best to save your important files twice on BluRay and SSD and every 5 years you should also copy your BluRay to a new BluRay. You can also save your non-personal data such as sound libraries on external Internet storage such as the free Google Drive, Mega, MediaFire and many others.

Most executable programs and keygens are usually deleted or not accepted by external Internet services, you can also pack all keygens separately with WinRar and burn a DVD etc.!

@macaca, however, you can still get most of them on the Internet, so you have not suffered a total loss.

I'm late to the party and I'm not gonna read 8 pages.

My thoughts: SSDs are NOT made for long time (archival) storage. The bits on there are 'trapped' charges that slowly leak when not powered and refreshed by the controller.

And there is that other thing: A data rescue company can get your data from that platter of an HDD in a worst case scenario. In the end it would be a matter of money, but you WILL get your data. You can even get the magnetic charges with an electron microscope when monney is no issue and the platter has not been exposed to the elements. And when the drive isnt that old and they still have the parts you even get your data back for 500 to 1000 bucks.

I'm team HDD (and I have more than one backup of everything, before you call me crazy for mentioning the data rescue stuff)

Thats powerd on in data centers. Thats not "I have several 20Tb drives under my kitchen sink"
The SSD won't likely die as long as its powered on and can do its refresh cycles.
It WILL die when not powered on every now and then for several hours.

if you want to keep your data fresh, the drives should be in the crisper drawer of your fridge, under the sink is for waxpaper, old tennis shoes, and old porn you don't want your mum to find, label it as "insurance forms 2014 archive" then nobody will pay it any attention.

Perhaps of interest - I cleaned out my old electronics last weekend and found a phone that was last powered on in 2009. To my surprise, the files (photos) on the microSD card were still intact.

Must've been a fun trip down the memory lane! Every time I go through my old "not serious" pile of discs etc. I find stuff that's a) funny, b) forgotten, c) "why the fuck did I save this?".

On a serious note, I've no idea about (micro)SD longevity and their use in long-term storage/archival, but 15 years is nothing to sneeze at.

I've got "corn" on my NAS from 2000's and earlier. "Corn" survives, somehow. and films and samples, of course. However, I had to copy all of my CDs to it years ago because CDs from the early 2000's were starting to go bad.

I have several vinyl HDD and one wax SSD, the vinyl last much longer, especially if you place them in the afternoon, in a sunny window.

It is unclear in the initial question whether the HDD or SSD is going ot be used or not while its saving your data. The problem with such an unclear question is that half of the people that vote might assume you ARE going to use them daily and have them turned on, while the other half might assume the oppossite. So only when you ask a question that is really clear, then such percentages are going to mean anything.
    - If it's not used, then absolutely without a doubt HDD. They do not die when you do not use them. I can still use teh first HDDs i ever got 20 years ago without any problems. Sure, i do not use them, but if its long term storage then I assume you';re not connecting them to your pc every day but have them turned off most of the time. SSD's loose data if you dont use them for a longer period of time (like 2+ years) so again if you do not use them daily but have htem stored somewhere for long term, then they offer absoluttely no benefit.

I think it's important to back up very important data multiple times, BluRay, DVD, VD, HDD, SSD and
important company data externally outside of your home in case there's a fire or water damage.

yup. 3-2-1 method, and in different places.... costs a little money and time obviously, but one tends not to regret having their data as secure and safe as reasonably can be done.
