Don't know why so many say if you have an XP machine don't hook it to internet... Been using XP 22 years now even right now never a problem even today... Have probably 12-13 XP machines you just use older software which is better anyway & run it like a raped ape...

I had a windows 10 machine given by a neighbor I did favors for during the years looking after their place when they were gone... A Dell 5555 so I used it offline only for several years never a problem... However Wife needed a more modern machine for internet use banking & such so I gave it to her..., Only when it got hooked to internet all kinda problems occur even though had ESET nothing to stop the shit...

You may have nowadays 16 GB RAM but cubase runs minimum 8 GB RAM (for phukin' what?) so now you say I'll just get a machine with 64 GB RAM well then cubase will suddenly require 32 GB RAM... it's all the same masturbation, except NOW you can heat your home with all that RAM lighting up & always greater chance of crash & istability with all those busses back-forth more on the road more crashes possible... But on the bright side you can heat your home with it... And don't even get me going on how cheap & chinsy everything is made these days with 'built-in planned obsolescence'...

The upshot is that modern DAW developers are going the route of video game developers.. 'Just get it out the door, NOW... we will fix whatever, whenever as feedback comes in'... this is due to modern internet & faster everything allowing constant 'updates' thus no matter how 'final' anything is you are still a beta tester... i guess as long as so many will keep putting up with it... Looking about the internet it's pretty rampant...

This is why OLD soft is stable & better because 25 years ago it was largely CD distribution so you had ONE CHANCE to get it right plus it had to work well on old grim machines there were no such update options like today & this is also why the old soft was more expensive than nowadays yet abandoned by the masses...

True power is buying an old XP machine off ebay for ten bucks & populating it with $150,000 of old CG & audio software nobody wants anymore yet making just as good music off a fraction of resources>>>

    No, there aren't any.
I didn't get that clinging to windows 7 for ages.
From Win 8 on it had a better driver architecture making lower latencies possible, but Win 7 evangelists didn't care.

I don't care what people do with their lives.

what I hate is when they tell the kids 'you have to use that 15 years old system to make music, it's the best'. It's not.

There is no use in hunting newest versions, but when one has to jump through too many hoops to make ancient software work on modern hardware or with your latest audio device it's time to move on.

software compatibility and lack of public key/certificate renewals,
sure if you're at least a bit skilled in IT, it's not a problem, but it's still an additional hassle,

for ex. my old PC (signature) officially supports W7 and W10, and I run W11 fine - I don't see a reason to be stuck with W7 even if it would undoubtedly work as good as W11

People will tell you not to put an XP machine online, because it is the most insecure and vulnerable OS still commonly used in the world.

    https://www.offsec.com/metasploit-unleashed/

This course was originally written based on using Windows XP NIST images run inside a VM running on Kali Linux. They ask you make a donation to a charity, but it is free.

Don't bother installing Dradis, there is no reason to actually document your progress; unless you want to learn how.

Only advvantage is that maybe some new software no longoer works on new hardware/OS, but it doesn t explain why some people here who rather than making music spend their time downloading the newest stuff for free from the sister site still brag about how proud they are of using windows 7 or xp in 2025

Yep, this is one of the two biggest problems by far of modern software in general. Updating is easy so we will fix it in the mix... ahem...sorry... with some updates later

The other one is bloated/unoptimized software (unoptimised, that goes for you @saccamano ;) ). Different but related. And the thing is since the multicore CPUs era speed no longer grows exponentially. This also happens everywhere. I'm a web developer and sometimes I see trends that seem like heresy to me.

Older computer enhances humility, I think. Best creative efforts come from work on older hardware, while you are in soul-pain wanting those super-expensive latest toys famous studio musicians have. Be it a new PC with a powerful CPU or a synth.
I recently was able to purchase - only after 10 years - my dream PC - unbelievably fast CPU and also just yesterday I ordered a Novation SL MkIII 61 keys + 1 sustain pedal & 1 effect pedal, because I was craving it for 4 friggin' years and way before that and I had nothing just my temple-mouse poor PC keyboard to try out "playing" some pads that made me feel good. Never forget that little kid laughing on YT, when he was given a simple math test and he didn't even bother to calculate how many dollars (2 or 5) Jack has after giving Jane 1 dollars.. Instead he began laughing loudly:
    - Your ass is broke man! Hahahaha!

All the while imagining I was playing on an expensive piano or a 88 key synth-action semi-weighted master controller... Latter only exists in my imagination. Since Yamaha only did the Montage M7 in not a glorious 88 synth-key version... I love piano, but I'm a sound-effect creator and we totally need those 100-key FSX Keyboards with Polyphonic After Touch, except nobody is making them!!

I'm a highly tech savvy guy so jumped from Win 8 to win Win10, bypassed Win 9 and never either missed or regretted it. Follow me!!

I only had windows 9 installed for a week before I upgraded to 9.5 Extreme. man the difference was like night and day. I'd still be running it but I can't find DDr4.5 so-dimms in GoFaster Redd, so I rolled it back to windows 98 in a virtual machine and Berkley Standard Distribution for the boot loader. I only use the machine for making ice and coffee, and occasionally downloading NPR news and remixing it.
