Ryuichi Sakamoto - Greatest Hits Full Album (2021)

 

I recommend just listening to his album "12" for starters and maybe check out Bibo no Aozora and his film score of The Revenant. If you're still interested after that you can dig deeper. His most well known piece is Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence but imo that is not him at his peak as it follows a pretty standard harmonic formula for japanese film music at the time.

He won Grammy, Oscar, Golden Globe....
He as a member of YMO pioneered Electronic music...
Ushered the " Synthpop" genre

His songs were covered by greatest artists of all time including but not limited to Michael Jackson, Eric clapton etc

Brought many now legendary instruments to mainstream use including Roland VP-03, and the now legendary Roland TR808( In fact they tested the 808 in their performance and productions, even before it was released a year later)

I still can't get his music from YMO out of my head till today. To me it still sounded fresh, mesmerizing and inspiring. In fact it was their music along with Daft punk and Depeche Mode which inspire me to venture into the field of Electronic Music production

I watched & listened to him perform in Sydney in the 90's... with a violinist, to promote hi album.
- naturally I have several of his CDs.

'Sakamoto Ryuichi' as the Japanese say ... honorific ... Family-name first.
