Sorry for the too well-known song...
This may have already been mentioned, but....

When I first heard this song, I genuinely thought the composer was a genius.

It's not my country, I have a zero understanding of what the job is, yet the harmony, deceptive cadences, seamless shifts, melody and when ".... is still on the line" is sung in a few places, it just hits the spot. I won't say anything as silly as it might be one of the greatest pop songs ever written, but musically, it is just a really well written pop tune.

Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb deserve the credit for the 100s of versions out there, and most of them are very good. Cassandra Wilson also did a fine more 'airy' re-interpretation of it in her own way while retaining the emotional constructs at a slower tempo, which goes to show well written songs and tunes can be done in almost any way and they still sound good. I liked REM's version surprisingly too because I never really spent any time listening to them.

Glen Campbell is absolutely one of the greatest musicians to ever pick up a guitar and sing.

It's surprising how many people did not realize he was a session guitarist/musician for a long time before he gained popularity as a country-pop singer.

People who don't follow guitar think Glen, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed were just country bumpkins who twanged along... it's understandable but infuriating.
