Hey man what's up. I do agree it was a different time and some people did just enjoy the dance routines.
I need to argue though, that the drug use (or should i say abuse) in the 70s and 80s was much bigger than today. Today is the age of information and "awareness", with all the good and the bad this brings along. People in the 70s and 80s were much more naive about drugs and alcohol. Wtf, most of them were even unable to distinguish playback acts like Boney M who never (i believe bound by contract) sang a single line live in their prime time career ('76- '84). And the same goes for Eruption too of course, both made by the greatest music biz con man, producer Frank Farian (RIP) who later went to do the same with Milli Vanilli but times had changed and you can't get away with the same con forever hehe.
So while i remember those times fondly because those were my teen years and i have danced my butt off with the craziest, silliest routines on fucking Daddy Cool & Rasputin, looking back now i can't help but cherish the original classics like Chic and ostracize the phonies like BoneyM/Eruption etc.

As some of you have previosusly mentioned, the 2 drugs that dominated the disco scene were cocaine, and the quaaludes, popularly known as "disco biscuits." In NYC clubs like Studio 54, The Saint, The Gallery, etc. it was "normal" for patrons and artists to be snorting cocaine out in the open. Some of the DJs were so coked out that they could not even mix properly. Nobody gave a fuck because 90% of the place was high. If you were a DJ, getting tipped with drugs was the norm. Those DJs, like myself, who did not use drugs, made extra free tax income by selling it to the bartenders, and waitresses who used them or resell them to the patrons and artists.

 

A little bit off topic but worth clarifying. While Boney M did not sing in their live performances or records, Eruption did. There was nothing phonie about Eruption. As to Frank Farian, as much as he conned many with the acts he produced, we can't overlook his great talent as a producer, singer, and songwriter. Frank knew how to write and produce a dance/pop hit song as well as anyone. Working with him, remixing a couple of his songs, was a pleasure. In my opinion he was a musical genius. RIP Frank!

 

Agreed. To not be misunderstood never said Farian wasn't talented. I think only in my dreams i 'd have such a big hit like he did tens of them. He just conned his way one too many times and in my book lost all credibility. As for Eruption, i did see them in 1980 in a festival of sorts among other bands, they "played" 4-5 songs and it was all playback. And then Supermax (!) went on to play for an hour or so and fkn killed it. RIP Kurt Hauenstein. Anyway, i really want to believe Precious Wilson was as great as she sounded on record but as mentioned i never got the chance to witness it. Nor there is any content online that i am aware, of her singing live any of the past Eruption hits like One Way Ticket, I Can't Stand The Rain etc. I will take your word for it though, because i am a fan... Of yours that is hahaha.

There are both studio and live recordings of Eruption's "One Way Ticket":

The original version is a studio production by Frank Farian from 1978.
This version was recorded and produced at Hansa Records in Berlin.

Live recordings of the song also exist. One example is Eruption's performance at the "Disco of the 80's Festival" in Russia in 2008.

The original recording, which is most famous and chart-successful, is definitely the studio production by Frank Farian.
This version reached high chart positions in various countries, including number 1 in Switzerland.
