Why do I sometimes get those green checkmarks? They disappear after refreshing the desktop.

I have also gotten those sparingly. I have also gotten red X's, too. I just thinks it's a temporary glitch. Refresh and icons go back to normal.

"The green check marks on desktop icons indicate that the files or folders are synced with Microsoft OneDrive and are backed up to the cloud. If you prefer not to see these marks, you can disable OneDrive or stop syncing."

Why anyone would use this is beyond me - especially on a production box. A production box connected to internet no less.

those usually mean files are locally available when folder is sync'ed via some cloud service (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, Synology etc...)

Yup. It's the same deal with most of the mickeysoft garbage ware - e.g. defender A/V & FW, edge browser, win-updater, onedrive, etc... There are services and scheduled tasks dedicated to keeping these things installed. If that machine is connected to the internet and has the autonomous OS updater POS turned on, after one win updater session all that garbage will be back on your machine once again.

Unless the end user takes steps to reverse engineer all the "features" they will continue to plague that host machine every time it connects to the internet.
