    A Question for You

If you could go back five or ten years in time, what is the one most important piece of advice you would give yourself about music production and mixing?

Since I started with FL Studio, the idea that there's no need to learn every DAW and that one is more than enough—I didn’t believe it back then, and I still don’t now, especially not at that time. But saying 'Get a Mac and Logic(and Reaktor), it'll be good in 2025' and don't even look at the others.—now that would have been good advice (I'm saying this today. :) )

Don't be too insecure about your production. Connect with others, they all have their own insecurities. You'll level up much faster when you surround yourself with other likeminded people who are passionate about music too.

get everything in writing. no handshake agreements, and let no one speak on your behalf. Having a $35,000 lawsuit for royalties that were rightfully yours is not fun.

I learned this moderately early on but it took a decade to implement it...... Now it is ingrained.

Do not care what other people think about what you create if it is not in the popular market because you created it for the sake of creation, and the only person who has to like what you create is you.

    - And one other closely tied to that I learned even earlier - if you create for approval or to be liked you will remain in a state of disappointment, so learn to love and like yourself, because if you do not, you cannot expect anyone else to.

i feel like everything was necessary to be where i am now. when i think on this, its like all connected; as in if i didnt do this, i wouldnt have learned that. i had to take losses, i had to fail, face rejection, i had to learn to trust myself. theres so many lessons

    i would let him cook

Started my music career more or less in 1986. I saw people, music trends, technologies, audio formats come and go. There is no advice to give, because it´s no problem at all with MUSIC, but with the always quicker changes in the world. What earlier took 10 years (ex music from the 70s to the 80s) today happens in a couple of years or maybe less. Music as an art form lose its value because we are oversaturated of info. What earlier needed a physical space - like LPs, cassettes, or CDs - today we have everything contained onto a cell phone with Spotify, Apple Music, Vevo etc. Internet and social media destroyed everything for bad or good. What in my young days costed YEARS of studying music theory, investing thousands of dollars today we have hundreds of very good tutorials, VSTi instruments and plugins. AI makes today "music" of a more or less decent quality, and the IQ, expectations, needs and free time of people in general lowered drastically. All in all, the act of creation is still very satisfying at a personal or ego level. Don´t miss it if you feel the impulse. But don´t put excessive faith in making a decent living as a musician, those times are over since the popularisation of Internet.
