I need an additional output for my Babyface Pro and was thinking of adding the Behringer ADA8200. Sound quality isn't a big concern since it's just for the 'sidechain' input of a real-time harmonizer.

It is in fact an overkill (a cheap one, though) as far as no. of outputs goes, and I don't even need additional mic inputs atm. So, I considered alternatives like sort of splitter, but that would take away the ability to send and control separate signals via TotalMix to ext. FX...

Any of you guys using this combo? ADAT should handle clock sync w BF as master I think?

I'd appreciate any thoughts or alternative suggestions ofc

I'm using an ADA8200 with both RME BF1 and BF Pro FS, no problems so far. Sound quality is fine, converters are fast, sync is handled via ADAT. You can't go higher than 48 kHz, but that would halve the usable ADAT channels anyway and I'm working at 44.1 kHz, so for me it's ok.

Couldn't you use the headphones out for it, they are an independent output

I have an ADA8200 that I've used a couple of times with my Babyface Pro as a mobile rig to record drums, and there has been no problems whatsoever. I haven't used it for a long time now though since I mostly use my FF802 at home, and the 4 preamps it has are usually enough.

As long as you connect the ADA8200 to both the ADAT in and out you should be able to use the BF as master. If you only connect it with one cable to the ADAT in on the BF, the ADA8200 will be master.

Tnx. Yep, I forgot to mention - I work with 48 kHz, so that’s not an issue for me either.

That was exactly what I had in mind for a moment - using a 30€ headphone amp like the Mackie HM-4 on PH out to even control the levels. But then I quickly realized that I have the whole mix on headphones, not just the instrument I want to send to the harmonizer.

For example, a live mic + virtual guitar or piano or a chordal track + drums. I need to send only the instrument that triggers harmonies, without vocals and drums.. and it looks like expanding outputs with a DA is the only option :dunno:

I have the same interface. I think you can use one of the HP out spliting left+rigth sending a diferent mix (or instruments thath trigg) inside TotalMixFx. The other HP out (mini) could be use for check.

Could you use Studio One's splitter feature instead?

Well RME got the best AD-DA converters... running these through some Behringer splitter or bay is completely nuts!
Quality always counts, no matter what you do! I highly recommend to contact the RME support for their recommendations and advice!

AFAIK both BF headphone jacks share the same output - no separate routing/volume control.

Don't use S1.. I remember the splitter, but don’t think it’d give me a separate physical out
    tnx

RME’s 90% about function/stability for me, 10% sound. I make music, not mix/master. Even if I did, how’s ADDING a Behringer DA gonna ruin it? Still using BF mains/phones outs. It’s just for sidechaining - no one hears it..
No need to ask RME - their answer’s obvious: get an (A)DA converter that fits ur needs/wallet. But if I ever rly need additional HQ ins/outs, I’ll just upgrade to a UCX II or something

That said, plenty of folks on RME's forum run BF + ADA8200, and RME tech never called it a bad idea (think band submixes, live looping, etc.)

yea it's fine, most people won't really hear a difference anyway:

it's important to have Babyface run as master, feeding clock via ADAT back to ADA8200 though
