Funny, but the samples don’t have to be copyrighted, though. You can sample yourself, your synths and your own sound sources (like foley sounds). I’ve been messing with this lately. It can be as simple as playing a juicy Rhodes chord, sampling that, then playing it in single notes. It was a common trick to not record synths straight in, but sample them into a Mirage, Akai SXXX, Emulator, Kurzweil, Roland S-series or ASR and then manipulate and mangle those there.

 

Regarding tracks made with ONLY samples, Liam Howlett is a master. This is an old video, but it really showcases that mindset. My mind simply does not operate like this, so I could never do it, but I’m fascinated by it.

Another one I've come to really enjoy is the epic work Everywhere at the End of Time by Leyland Kirby aka The Caretaker. It's a 6 hour long plunderphonics collage of old ballroom music and describes the deteriorating mind with dementia.
