I have a budget of about 300-400$, I've been looking at the KRK Rokit series but have yet to test them... I don't really know any other decent monitors so I'd appreciate any help! Thanks in advance!

 

Everybody and thier mom's dog has a pair of krks. I have some rokit6 g2s.. They are top notch low-mid freq monitors but lack a high-end.
For your budget I would personally cop some Adam Audio monitors. The Adam F5 near field joints are trash but most of thier other blasters are cream. The A3X are top notch. Mild wide highs, warm miss, thunderous bass, prime for mix sessions. p

Another good one for your budget are the LS3 5a.They are like the ATH-M50's of the speaker game. Alot of people are selling thier rogers/sterling ls3s right now too so... If you are gonna buy some used make sure the seller has a high rating. I had a friend that purchased some Rogers ls3s and got some bootleg Chinese joints with copied kef drivers.

I personally have some Genelecs that were the greatest bday present of all time but they are pricey. If you can find some Genelecs I would cop them.

Genelecs are too harsh and tinny sounding as are the Adams, IMHO.....if you're looking for good neutral monitors that won't brake the bank, try these:

FOCAL

I have the CMS 40's which will blow you away and you'll never look back! The Alpha series is new and came out this month so I haven't tried them.....

 

I use KRK 8'' I love them

 

As always, my advice is Equator D5.
For the price, it's hard to beat.

I've only heard good things about the Eris, though.
It's pretty new, so the choice would not be as straightforward as Equator.

I would be careful with entry level from famous brands, Adam S3 are killers but A7 sounds like crap (at least to my ears).

 

I cannot give a personal opinion but I have read positive reviews of the Behringer: Truth..... series.
Also the Behringer: NEKKST series looks nice.

 

My advice is to save a bit more for a better model, and don't forget about your D/A, supports, cables and room treatment.

 

i've always read that if you're gonna get near-field monitors, or any monitors really, that you should get nothing less than 8's b/c they can cover most of the freq spectrum. smaller monitors don't reproduce the low-end signal in full, so you may need to get/use a subwoofer. consider getting a pair that can reach 50 Hz or lower without a subwoofer.

FTR, i use Yamaha HS8's. 3-400 bucks will only get you one of these monitors, unfortunately (i wish they were cheaper, but they are worth every penny, i swear!). i can't find a pair of 8's from any manufacturer under $400 (avg is abt $250 for one. 8's normally aren't sold in pairs). i'd say save a couple hundred more bucks & make the investment to get 8 inch monitors. others may say different.

I have A pair if Yamahas HS 50M (now disontinued and displaced by the new HS5) with a HS10 sub. Together they break your price range, but I'm thinking about buying a pair of JBL LSR305. I insist on the small driver size because they work on my really small mixing space. However, the bigger brother of those JBLs are around your budget too. They have superb reviews at SOS (as the Focal recommended before do as well). Anyhow I'm yet to listen to them for fair comparison.

in your price range anything from yamaha,jpl,krk will be grate!!!go and listen them!!pick the ones that your ears like the most.

 

Nobody mention about EVEs? C'mon man, their SC205 delivers a bigger and more open sound stage than usually a 5" should. I listened them in the store and what i like about them compared to ADAMs, is that they're more warmer sounding (and less "ADAM's sparkle" which sometimes might be called harsh by some). But you would definetely need a sub for them anyway and they're pretty expensive for your budget as well.
Whatever... for your budget the Yammies could be your choice if you wait a little while to save a bit more money so you can afford them.

 

Presonus Eris M5 are also great choice for that price range

 

Depend of what "kind" of music you want work with. But keep in mind that a too tiny woofer won't give you enough bass range to work decently with.
For my side I use Focal CMS 65. Obviously not in your budget, but it can gives you another input …

 

Monitors are a subjective thing, and I can only speak for myself.
I have always been looking for monitors that have proper stereo imaging, reveal plenty of detail without being fatiguing, clear but not overpronounced bass, and "tight" reproduction of transients, if you know what I mean.

After Tannoy Reveal and Alesis Monitor One Mk2 Active, I have now found a pair that, for the first time, fulfills my needs very well:
A pair of Adam A5X active monitors. They might be above your price limit (I've paid $500 for a demo pair), but they really deliver IMHO.
They have a very clear and balanced sound, they're small, yet they have remarkably good bass for the size and they're available as Hi-Fi speakers in an enclosure with more visually pleasing finish at a much higher price.
I still wonder how I have not yet missed any bass from a speaker this small, and it's the first speaker that I don't feel like EQ'ing.

Genelecs are great too, but kinda outa reach, aren't they?

People who are not used to speakers like these may at first find them aggressive or harsh, and need some time to get used to the "clear sound", which is normal, but once you know them, you'll hardly want to miss them.

However, I want to mention another aspect here:
Are you intending to use them for your own listening pleasure, or will you create mixes for other people?
If so, you'll probably better monitor with a car stereo, a smart phone and an iPod/mp3 player (Bruce Swedien must have done this, I'm sure!)
(just kidding)

 

I'm gonna use them mostly for creating mixes, working on tracks, etc... But I'll go with the smart phone mixing! Definitely can work for me as I have one!
