First of all, thanks for bringing this up,
I was going to "convert to stereo" what I recorded from YouTube, and thanks to you I actually started doing it. So, here are 2 links (original on YouTube) and my version on reverbnation
if you like the stereo in my version, I'll tell you how it's done (it took 5 minutes)

    1. Upload the file you need to your DAW
    2. Duplicate this file 2 times, i.e. you will have 3 identical files, name them "right", "left" and "center"
    3. The Haas effect rules: move the left or right tracks (only one!) a few cents to the right
    4. Place the left and right tracks - left and right to the limit in the panorama, listen - you will already hear something like stereo.
    5. Cut the mids and highs in the "Center" track
    6. Cut the lows in the left and right tracks
    7. Add some highs to the left track
    8. Add some mids to the right track
    Done!
PS. If I hadn't done all this, but I was given the original and the new track to listen to, I would definitely say that the new one is stereo! indeed, for example, pizzicato violins are heard only on the left and nowhere else...what is this if not stereo?

This is the trick. When you have a busy mix, is a good idea to intentionally cancel out the phase of something you don't want to hear mono.

honestly I avoid like evil the "hand made" haas effect directely on tracks. I use it on single returns for ambient fx like reverb or delay. I have billions of solutions to make mono sounds "more open", but pure haas effect its not my cup of tea, never, even on pads or any other background sound

I dont think this thread is a good place to discuss this, just telling you, I thought OP wanted specific infos about JJ techniques. PS22 is a very complex plugin that needs experience and a deep study of manual and experiments, nobody will understand it "open try a few presets and it doesnt work..." I started to enjoy it after years trying it, even automating it! which gives some kind of magics on pads or any background sound (vocals...)

Anyhow, I ALWAYS work with "true parallels" to make a fake stereo fx, I mean I dont even use plugins with the mix knob and put it on the actual track. I think it is better to use a parallel that its 100% "wet" and blend by faders with the mono untouched sound.

And for this I have many chains, I list a few plugins: waves PS22, Waves REEL adt (among my favourite 3), a chain with Roland dimension D, AMS delay-pitch shifter (possibily my favourite), Precision K-stereo ambience recovery (among my favourite 3), Raising Jake Studios sideminder and so on

this is exactely what PS 22 x split does, plus something "hidden in the algos" like all old waves plugins

Hey, you could be right. I referenced Jaycen Joshua as an engineer because I really like his style, and the transients and sustain characteristics of the synth stems always sound naturally wide in his mixes.

That being said, I completely agree that the Haas effect ruins mono compatibility, which is a dealbreaker for me.

You mentioned knowing several solutions for converting mono tracks to stereo. Can I send you a direct message to ask for more information?

    Hi!

    You can try the following:

    - create a send from your mono track to a stereo auxiliary track
    - on this auxiliary track, place a very short delay without repetition (< 30 ms)
    - reverse the polarity of the right channel on this auxiliary track
    - raise the fader of your auxiliary as you wish

Thus, you create a kind of side component, which cancels itself out when you switch everything to mono.

When I use this technique, I regularly also place low-cut and high-cut filters before the delay.
