Yes it is possible for one stick to be the culprit. If your memory layout is 4 ram sticks you are already putting a strain on the cpu's memory controller. ECC ads an additional layer of data fault protection, but it is generally avoided by most people due to not always work on desktop mobos even if on paper is supported. Although i have to say here, this particular mobo you have, is one of the few reported to work with ECC with no problems.
Now the AMD AM4 (and AM5 too) platform, works properly (full speed) with a dual channel memory configuration. That is either 2 or 4 sticks of ram. Using just 1 or 3 cuts the memory bandwidth in half because you are now on a single channel config. People who go for 4 ram sticks, should only do it because they need to use the maximum amount of ram and only in this case. (The memory controller on AMD 7xxx series is slightly better). If you use 4 x8 gb sticks it is advised to swap those for two double the size, that is 2 x 16gb. Or even better 2x32gb which is highly recommended.
If you are using two ram sticks make sure you have them seated in the correct slots. The correct position for two dimms is slots A2 and B2, which are the second and fourth slot away from the cpu. Check the pic i put below. Lastly make sure that the stick you singled out is actually faulty. You do that by leaving just that stick on in the A2 slot and run memtest to see if you get any errors. If it is faulty and everything else is correct get it replaced for a new identical one.

To locate the issue with RAM or Slot, use the good ram in the suspect slot. If that works, then it's the other ram module.

To be certain, then try the bad RAM stick in the good slot. If that fails, it is the stick. (amended.. it's STILL the RAM module..

If however that then works? it is likely to be either a bad connection that has somehow fixed itself, or memory wasn't the fault in the first place.

Hold on.. let me try that again:- (it has been a VERY long time since I last had to do this.

Try the bad ram in both slots.. if it works in one not the other, then it is the slot (cant be the ram at fault) IF it doesn't work in either, then the RAM is at fault

Now finally, try the good ram in both slots and it should work in both..

Also, make sure you are earthed before you try the above (use an earth strap if you have one)

thank you taskforce and thank you sylent.will.fall

I already tested with memtest86 but with both modules connected. Maybe I did not wait long enough for the error to pop up? I think I waited for 3 or 4 passes. But maybe it didn’t show the error because of the eec architecture? Anyway I will now test as described by sylentwillfall. I actually hope a lot it’s the RAM and not something else. I am using two 16 gb modules. And they where placed in the correct slot.

also CPU-Z can display if memory is being run in dual channel mode (= dimms in correct slots)
I learned this around 14 years ago

The main thing is that you buy the same RAM sticks. If you have 4 RAM sticks and 4 slots you can't go wrong!!!!

Hey everyone and thanks for all the tips. And I’m actually able to put a pc together how it’s supposed. I’m a person who does read the manual.
But this was more tricky than user error. Because memtest86 did not show any error, but after taking a the RAM out and testing the sticks one by one it was all working again. No more crashes. So I put in both in again and everything was like perfect again. I changed nothing but moving the RAM in and out did fix the issue. It must have been a bad contact. I don’t have any other explanation. Never had this happen before, specially after using the pc for more than a year without hardware issues. I’m happy this issue is fixed now …. And without any cost involved.
Next up will be 3d printing air guides because the case definitely needs improvement for better and more cooling. But as always with diy project the first build will always be the prototype.

Whilst it's pleasing it is all working again now, give it a couple of weeks before getting too excited. It is possible to have an intermittent fault that just by moving stuff around can delay the inevitable.
I would advise you to use it as normal, but be aware it COULD play up again. just in case.

On AM4 motherboards, I think the 5900x is a sweet spot. But first, if mostly experiencing mostly in the mixing stage, you should always set the buffer high for that part. Most engineers that I've hired in commercial studios mix at a minimum of 1024. 2048 for high track and plugin counts.

So actually my choice for this setup was a little stupid. Because I need a low buffer setting because I want to mix hardware and software. So even 256 is a bit high. Also single core performance would be nice if increased. For multi threaded rendering and everything that can actually use this cpu the pc is great. But for my task the performance of a Mac mini would be much better. Are there any windows cpu that allow for Apple like low latency while performing at the same time?
I think if my build will become unstable again I must switch to Apple. I am so annoyed by tweaking the bios and also using so much electricity!
The only thing why I’m not selling everything and buying a Mac is that Apple has no multitouch support. This is something that is just cool. Being able to touch the vst (not the same as moving a knob) but still nice to also be able to adjust two parameters at once even in Ableton that doesn’t support multitouch natively. But most VST and all Mac for live devices support multi-touchscreen.

Hello @Noael, Ryzen has caught up and is just behind the Apple M4 Pro in single-core operation, and the Ryzen is significantly ahead of the Apple M4 Pro in multi-core operation.

    AMD Ryzen 9 9950X (€ 650)
Socket AM5 Desktop processor Number of threads 32, 4.3 GHz max. Turbo clock 5.7 GHz Granite Ridge ,
Power consumption max. (TDP) 170 watts AMD Radeon Graphics L3 cache 64 MB

    Conclusion

With the Apple M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max, Apple has once again developed an extremely fast CPU series and had it manufactured by TSMC in 3 nm. The M4 Pro can easily compete with a large number of classic desktop processors: in single-core scenarios, the CPU wins on average against the assembled competition, while in multi-core loads it depends on the number of cores of the opponent. If the power consumption under load and thus the efficiency card are taken into account, the x86 competition once again has no chance.

I get that you feel, (rightly or wrongly) angry that you have made a mistake with your purchase, but if I may I would like to try and provide you with another view.
Firstly, whether or not your system becomes unstable, it wont be because of the specifications you have chosen, it will be because of one of the items has a manufacturing fault. That being the case, instead of looking at this like you've made a mistake, use what you've bought to bring you enjoyment and make great use of it.
Nobody will care when listening to what you have created, or concern themselves as to what it was created with, only how good it sounds!

the hardware chips and sensors are changing the way the software interacts with your workflows, bringing new physical components that the software makes most use of due to it having the physical component. so much changing that you can get a better small form Ryzen 9 barebones that chews up even ryzensn 7s

I really can’t see the AMD 5950X ever becoming too old or slow for a media studio—this CPU is an absolute beast. Personally, I’m still running an ancient Intel Xeon 1230 v3 from 2015 in my studio, paired with 32GB of RAM and 4TB of SSD storage. There’s almost nothing I can’t do in Cubase or Studio One with this setup. Graphics processing, however, is a different story, which is why I’m holding out for the AMD 9950X3D. With that CPU, 96GB of RAM, and NVMe storage, I’ll finally be retiring the aging Xeon 1230 later this year.

Hey remember that talk a little earlier?
There is no normal way to overclock Apple Silicon comps.
But there are plenty of ways to oc Ryzen perfectly fine and outperform M4 anytime :winker:

Yes, I still remember our conversation very clearly.

The AMD Ryzen advertisement would then look like this:

The AMD Ryzen is faster than the Apple M4 when you overclock it!
Ask our specialist @taskforce, he can be reached in the AudioSexPro forum, he will help you with overclocking.

Oh.. hehehe... I am definitely not a specialist in overclocking. I can conduct a rough guide for Ryzen if that is up your alley hehe. But even better i can name at least 7-8 guys with worldwide recognition that post regularly videos on YT with very informative details for anyone who want to get their hands dirty haha. One of them is your fellow countryman DerBauer, mechatronics engineer and pro overclocker, he posts both in German and English. Look him up if you haven't already:)
Anyway. My quote was referring to the single thread performance and that only hehe. For anything else current Ryzen gen is surely faster than M4 in muti-thread performance as you pointed out.

Hello dear @taskforce, it is quite enough to point out to users that you can beat the M4 by overclocking.

Maybe write a few links to several experts to check the truth content yourself.
You have done that and thus fulfilled the mission of being cheaper and faster with the Ryzen CPU.
