I've just came upon a funny realization that despite this phrase being a meme on beginners, all I'm actually doing while mixing is using my ears, lmao. Also I'mh high.

 

I got bored of using my ears, so now i use my tongue instead... it does make my speaker monitors a bit soggy though.

 

Maybe share what was your journey to master listening. As Im self taught, Im definitely guilty of overdoing EQ and COMP for many years. Old mixes sound too hars overdone and wit little dynamic range and overal fines

Have an innovative idea.
Make elements fit together from the start.
Get in the zone (you know, when time flies).

Light EQ and Comp [if needed].
Light transient shaper and saturation [if needed].
Light clipping and limiting [if needed].

Just use your ears bro.

We all learn by making AND listening to what is already done (being ours or someone else work).
No one is going to teach you what is a "good" setting ... because it depends every time.

The final decision is yours.

Like it or not, at the end, yours ears and brain is your only interface with music.
And it is more a mental training than "ears".

"ears" mean nothing.
Like "use your eyes" in photography (i do both).

It is your mental training and experience that makes the difference.
And training again and again.

It is not "use your ears".
It is "Trust yourself, trust what you hear"

That's what I use. I've found that now that I'm older and have had serious issues being able to discern high frequencies that doing a colon cleanse can really help. Now I no longer need to keep puckering to hear the high hats and mixing no longer makes me constipated.
