Hey. Can anyone confirm that it's a Shure SM7B without foam (or windscreen or whatever it's called) on this shot? I've never seen it like that before, so it's my best guess

Yeah that's an SM7b

 

He has his lyrics in front of him, but looks like he has gone off script.

 

Yep, it's a Shure SM7B without foam.

 

Someone took the foam off that mic in order to put it further back with less muffled range on the voice.

 

The foam acts as a windshield which he has replaced with an actual pop filter. I'm not sure how that affects the sound of the room though.

I'd imagine it's minimal... still I'd love to try and see what happens.

 

The foam eventually disintegrates in certain conditions but comes with an alternate foam (comes in the box) that is more robust. Some users just take the foam off completely. The SM7 is just an SM57 without the capsule. Killer at eliminating your room problems. Need a preamp with lots of gain, or use with a cloudlifter or a fethead. I like it with a clean Grace or a Great River.

 

Thank you, guys. Yeah, I was also confused by the combination of "foam off/pop filter on". I thought that they were probably going for more raw/live sound but still wanted to tame plosives to some degree

 

I saw this phenomenon on the old Metallica some kind of monster documentary with Bob rock
That they were using on tracking/overdubing James's vocals in the control room..
It's a normal 7b with the removed popfilter sponge...

 

He obviously doesn't practice safe sex
