There can not be digital sound. Therefore there can not be a digital chacteristic either as long as we are manipulating or playing this sound back without audible errors created by dsp's which does not have to be the case anymore today.
There is only and exclusively analog sound. Who want's to have a "digital characteristic" so to say, needs to create audible errors. I just want to point out that this is not unavoidable.

And in this regard the discussion about a digital sound becomes technically and objectively obsolete. There is technically no sense in comparing because there simply is nothing to compare. One can talk about his perception of sound in an environment but then it should be articulated as his perception.

This archiving argument on tape makes sense. It is the most reliable method to save recorded data. However I only see real sense in archiving a composition anyways and here the most reliable, senseful medium is a piece of paper. After my philosophy a performance does not have to be archived.


So, to my understanding this "old working style" exclusively comes down to workflow and being able to work reliable and steady for over decades. It is the only senseful argument on why doing this.

My argument is that everything that happens on the stages of the world should at least be written down and described.

A music journalist can do that and he reports on the atmosphere, on the fans and perhaps on the quality of the performance. This way you can inform future generations about what happened and preserve the events in writing and images.

Everything that is on tape has to be digitized at some point anyway, usually on BluRays so that the treasures or cultural assets can be protected from decay. This is what museums do, for example. Every few years, according to a plan, all BluRays are burned onto BluRays again.

Really great treasures such as Mozart's recordings, for example, are also copied onto microfilm and stored deep in a bunker in the mountain.
Anything that is stored electronically is not really safe. Floods, power outages, war and other disasters can quickly lead to the complete loss of files.

One can also fashion a very effective EMP protective device using tin foil. I'm wearing one right now.

One of the problems with electronic storage - and this has already led to major problems - is that one day the reading devices no longer exist. This is an inherent problem e.g. for land registries, for example. Which medium guarantees its readability in the (very) long term?
Which PC today, for example, still has a magnetic tape drive with which data backups from 1990 can be read?

Let's think ahead 2,000 years. What was no problem at all for us in relation to the Romans was reading documents that had been found.
If people find a perfectly preserved music DVD in 2,000 years' time, where will they be able to buy the reader?

Provided you don't have a hearing aid or electronic implants in your skull, an aluminum hat is of little use.
And even then, for an EMP the aluminum foil would have to cover your entire head without any openings, which is only possible if it is stored separately from your body. Have fun with it
