both my PCs recently stopped opening these programs. one PC is online, the other is offline with no recent windows updates installed. the only thing i've done in the meantime is install software from the sister site.

any ideas? i've uninstalled and reinstalled both programs with cmd admin permissions. still the error

ok, i restarted and still had the problem. then i admin'd the command to uninstall and then reinstall, restarted, and it worked.

sorry if this is a waste of space, but i'm also kind of curious if this was a relatively benign result of software some us installed.

 

You don't have to apologize for wasting space here!
The software you install from the sister site never actually breaks anything. Most of it is user error or faulty drivers.

I ran out of ink in paint and that caused problems in wordpad cause the font was in white (no black ink) and the background was white, so white on white is as invisible as a polarbear in a snowstorm.

I had to download more ink from Microsoft, I think its a Paint Upgrade (free if you got the microsoft uberduber support program in windows 12), it was 50tbs, I thought I was downloading ARturia Keylab 14 or something.

Anyhow now i can use paint again and notepad and wordpad are working and it only doubled my internet billed metering this month.
I''ll be glad when microsoft and hp merge and I can send all my money to the same company when I want to print or use my computer and stuff.

 

this appears like user profile permissions got fcked up, in such case you gotta always look into what preceded such behavior

Check the health of your windows image, then scan it and if either something isn't great or damaged, repair it.
SFC is great but it does not find all errors in an image. If it did, Microsoft would never have invented DISM.

Command prompt or powershell:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Wait for it to finish - THEN

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Wait for it to finish - THEN

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

 

I trust the sister site releases (particularly the established groups), but I also figured that it's possible that the program itself, cracked or not, can cause little ripple effects.

The odd thing about the Microsoft angle (which is usually utterly plausible), is that one machine is entirely offline, it's a different OS, and it hasn't been updated for months. Same issue with Wordpad and Paint.

 

The worst part of using Paint is having to buy a new canvas from Microsoft every time I make a new image. They cannot get away with this.

If it happens again I'll try this and see what it tells me. Maybe it'll give us some insight, because this issue occasionally crops up for Windows users, but it doesn't seem they all share a common cause.

 

Have you disabled or unregistered any services or processes of late? There's a lot of seemingly useless or do nothing services/processes in the new win OS's. It's entirely possible to create situations such as yours after going on a tear disabling stuff without checking it out thoroughly first. Just a possibility.

I use it via Portable Apps (https://portableapps.com/) and I think Liberkey also has it (https://www.liberkey.com/en.html).
One can run the apps from each of those while not running the host programs, at the risk of writing to registry and/or creating folders in Appdata, etc. I find it very convenient to update all my portable apps occasionally with the host programs.

FastStone image viewer is another portable from Portable Apps I use a lot. It's a great manager with some great editing abilities as well.
When it can't do something, I choose from it's convenient external editor menu,"open in ... Paint.net", or very rarely... some more sophisticated bloated monster.)

I'm sure they are busy in Redmond Washington, I still haven't gotten my copy of Microsoft Pencils, that I ordered in 1992, can't wait to start working with digital pastels, when MS-Chalk comes out (real soon now)

 

I am a die hard user of Jasc Paintshop Pro 7 , I bought it when it came out over 20 years ago, installed it is under 50 MB, I have used it from Windows 98SE to Win 10 and it still works perfectly, I use it for photo retouching, some art design was a worthwhile investment, still to be found used on ebay, I hate overbloated software so as long as this works I'm satisfied. I personally never used ms paint it wasn't adequate for my needs.This is the only program I know that makes a backup copy of itself in its installed folder.

 

Well, Wordpad they just unceremoniously dropped, but MS Paint is updated... yes, it comes with AI bullshit now. I guess the layers make up for that, but like some others in this thread, I'm a Paint.net convert so I don't particularly care.

At least Notepad improvements have been, you know, improvements like tabs and UTF-8 support.

There's a reason why they keep these old apps updated along with the rest: they're test beds for future patches for actually important pieces of Windows. For instance, Notepad was the first to have proper Emoji support because that's where they tested improvements to various multibyte (think UTF-8 and UTF-32) encodings of characters. Not that I give a shit about emojis, but character encodings are very good indeed in general.

 

8 bit photons are proveably brighter and easier to work with, as one subdivides electrons into 16,32, or 64 bits the hues shift, the clarity disappears and the quantum fields entangle leading to subquantum smudging, as can easily seen by comparing an 8bit drawing of the mona lisa to a 64 bit one. Thats why i keep an 8088 cpu workstation for viewing bitmaps. and for loading old versions of Google Maps where you can actually see the fire hydrants so you dont get parking tickets.

8 Bit Ai programs are the closest to human consciousness, provable by the fact that just getting a yes or no answer can take weeks on an 8 bit workstation. Just like a human..

Microsoft actually writes all its codes in ms-paint, using a complex interpeter/compiler that evaluates colors, coordinates, adjacent colors and overall images into logic gates and flow structures. It makes it nearly impossible to hack their code as one has to have extensive colour and imaging training to just write "hello world!".

It has been estimated by a deep mole within the MS corporate world, that the entire Windows 13 code base will consist of over 40 trillion MS-Paint images and will take nearly 3 months to compile into executable byte code. (this may be an exageration as the XP code base images leaked and could be compiled in under 7 minutes)

still can't wait to get my hands on MS-Chalk, it really whips the Llama's ass they claim.
