Hi me too using Blo x as editor, I've tried a lot of them, Blo x does a very nice job!

 

Try with an external editor evrything is much better.

largo was already marketed as a plugin built from the blofeld, and the main difference was just the filter. I'm happy they made a better version but it does feel like double dipping to me still

 

Could be that they, waldorf. were afraid that "the usual suspects", who make the dsp emulator (virus etc) would go for a blofeld emulator in the near future. Now they can't anymore I guess since it is now current again. Or they recognized the demand for true emulations because of them. Just a guess

 

Why would Waldorf care what developers emulate? It's their hardware and "Blofeld" is their registered trademark. They can do whatever they want with it. Being a "current product" does not really matter either. As long as they keep their trademark maintained (by paying for renewals), it's their trademark wether they make anything currently or not. They released Largo in 2009.

 

So, I've only spent one session with the plugin so far but it does appear that there's no way to switch off the audio engine in order to just use it as a hardware editor.

This is a big issue when working in multitimbral mode as running 16 channels of synthesis in the box alongside the hardware is a huge waste of resources.

The whole point of using hardware is to offload processing from the PC, using the software as an editor to enable that doesn't work. What's the point in two identical instances of the sound?

Waldorf really need to address this in an update. Just give me an audio engine switch and I'll be happy.

Hey Radio, If that's in reponse to my last post, I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying.

When operating in Multi Mode in the VST, all voices are being synthesised in the box at the same time as being played by the hardware, thereby duplicating the sound in software/hardware simultaneously. I don't need the software to make any sound, just the hardware. There's no way to achieve this (aside from muting the DAW channel), you're stuck with the software using unnecessary resources.

 

Yes, I understand you, I have owned and sold the Blofeld hardware myself and find the Blofeld plugin quite wonderful, I can even import and play my own created Blofeld sound banks.

Now I want to respond to your previous post: Yes, I read it about the Multi, Multis are not my thing so I don't understand everything. But you explained it well, so I understand it. I think you should play the Blofeld plugin solo or import or export sound banks.

I think the Waldorf company is sometimes far removed from the reality of what users want. The Waldorf sounds great, but the idiosyncratic graphic design doesn't appeal to all fans. The first GUI of the Largo by Mr. Hartmann was brilliant, but they also made the GUI scalable there, so when version 2 came out, many people were happy until they opened the Largo 2 and looked at the unusual play of colors, oh man, Waldorf Waldorf what have you done...!

The Waldorf company went bankrupt once and they certainly don't want to experience that again

After testing it, I think they did a good job with the gui (at least a much better job than with Largo 2 which imho was a disaster). But the presets... I even prefered the Largo ones! (which by the way are far from great). Did not think they demonstrated the synth very well.

Yes, I already have the bloX editor but it's buggy. I've no problem with programming it from the hardware screen but it's just too time-consuming and I mainly gave up programming devices via tiny LCD screens twenty years ago.

Well yes, importing and exporting banks is what I'm stuck with, plus using bloX as an editor. Using the Waldorf software in relation to the hardware is basically useless, which it shouldn't be as it is marketed as a VST/editor.

I haven't actually purchased the Blofeld software anyhow as I've been given a spare license by an associate so it's not like I feel personally ripped off. It's just disappointing that a company like Waldorf haven't got such a basic and obvious issue sorted. For all the supposed intelligence of the devs involved with such companies I'm constantly surprised by how dumb they actually are and constantly fail to perceive a product from an end-users perspective. Meanwhile they wonder why we "try before we buy" and then cry about "lost revenue". Deliver a proper product and I'll pay you. Give me some half-baked shite and well, I probably won't even use you cracked after I've found you out..

Anyhow, back to the point of using multis. In my case it is to have separate patches, or layers, on each channel, all stored as a song specific set. It means that all parts are stored as a single "document", accessible at all times and also negates the need for adding additional program change messages to song MIDI data - Less MIDI data means better timing, as I'm sure you'll be aware of, it negates program change anomalies such as envelope release and FX tails from being cut off and as happens with some instruments, strange outcomes from sudden parameter changes. I have all multitimbral hardware set up with all channels immediately available in my template which makes both studio and live use much more straightforward. So as you can see, using a multitimbral instrument in solo mode isn't of a great deal of use to me.

I'm aware of your soundbanks and most probably already have them in my archive but I stopped collecting patches a long time ago as I don't think I've ever actually used an unadulterated third-party patch since the 90s! Third-party patches never fit in to a project correctly in my opinion and always require modification in timbre/timing etc so I simply design everything from scratch specifically for the role I need it to fulfill. About the only time I'll load up presets is when I want to demo a new instrument to hear what its potential capabilities may be. I started off with pure analog equipment in the 80s so sound design is second nature to me.
