I'd like to precede samples (e.g. a snare drum) with a reversed copy of them, by a few ms. What I usually do is copy, paste on another track, reverse etc. Is there a plugin to cut corners? Valhalla doesn't offer negative (forward) delay time...

Quick update: tried sending signal to a track plugged with JS: Delay w/ Reverseness + JS: Time Adjustment Delay... it should work, but it doesn't. Super clonky!

I guess it would have to deploy some sort of feed-forward shenenigans (which in the digital realm, despite latency, should be a breeze).

Perhaps all you want is the early reverse reverb effect? As in DM's Personal Jesus for instance?

Do you mean the pre-reverb? But I don't get the reverse sound, even if there is a reverse option for the impulse response generation, which makes sense.

Yep. Been searching for that sound for quite a while!

 

A reverse reverb is doable with a reversed impulse for example. But a "real" reversed sample playing in front of the snare is more complex, but I would try to code something like this:

A plugin that samples an adjustable length of audio (for example 100 ms) triggered by a transient, then reverses this snippet, puts an envelope on it to fade it in and mix it in in front of the transient of the continuous playing audio. The needed pre delay for this is compensated by an equal PDC value.

Sure this won't work while playing live because there is no flux capacitor available at the moment, but it should work fine for recorded audio or midi.

Another possibility would be to code a sample player with lets say 500ms of PDC that plays reverse samples of up to 500ms in a way that the end of the sample (and not the start) is aligned to the note on event. Again not usable while playing, but on spot with midi events. This should be the way the Cableguys thing is doing it.

 

Back in the "tape era" many artists and technicians experimented with putting the tape in reverse on to the machine, so it was very easy to generate reverse reverb, playing reverse guitars or vocals like the Beatles or something like that.

But .. I'll say that in most cases, this is a bad idea in plugin/IR form, because you need to know the length (of the tail and the source) ahead of time and you need to adjusts offsets for the sample or the output track accordingly.

So lots of fiddling for imperfect results; faster to macro/script your DAW's functions. Manually is the way to go in most cases - which might not be your case!

 

if you use DC Snares plugin, right above the top waveform image, the button right next to the edit, pitch, amp buttons there is a button with left and right arrow icon. it flips the sample over reversed, and then you can just drop a marker adjusting the start and end points.

I always just bounce in place, and reverse it manually also; because I will usually nudge it around some anyway. It's pretty common to do with a synth/lead patch too.

Without some kind of lookahead, how can any of them create the reversed audio and make it precede the audio being reversed?

Kilohearts Reverser is another good small plugin for this, still need to bounce and drag.

 

They all rely on the DAW's PDC.
