Considering a return to live performing, looking to put a 4 piece combo together for Holiday Inn, Pub, used car dealerships, typical art scene stuff. I'm wondering what would be the best drummist for this sort of an affair.

After extereme researches I have narrowed my probable choices to theses, don't know how common these styles are in my area will probably just settle on what I kind find, but let me know what would go best for this sort of combo/audience.

If anybody has played in this sort of combo, let me know what kind of drummer worked best for you.

Surely you mean skiffle (the obvious correct answer unless you include cocktail kit)

I would go for a small kick snare hi-hat kit or a cocktail kit if it is more suitable to play standing.

For my ears and European cultural background, the tabla is the most pleasant for the ears. A taiko is too dark and gloomy.
A snare is too bright and too intrusive. A drum machine is just a machine and a stopgap solution.

skittle is a sub-genre of skiffle played with hard candy on an old tea caddy by a man with gin on his breathl its a very precise sub-genre.
you can go with skittle and it will count in the skiffle category as well. too many choices just makes folks avoid making a decision.

all you say is true, but to get to the real rub, can he play over a banjo, bagpipes and an accordion? (am looking to rent a calliope for special occasions, so there may be steam powered noise as well)

we usually start out standing but migrate to leaning and falling over towards the tolling of the bell. due to the economy being what it is and all we usually take our pay in cocktails and pints, often some sort of boiled meat is included, if the staff find us pleasant or entertaining.

Because your instrumentation is Celtic, and someone already mentioned the Bodhran, and you asked for drums...

An acoustic folk kit if you really want a drummer is possibly closer than most drum kits. It also depends how Indie you want to make it instead of pure Celtic, as that's another option. Go with what you feel works best, that's all any of us can do.

I would consider simply setting up a single floor tom, a single ride (a hihat+pedal is fine too), and a single snare drum- play standing up with rods or mallets or something light- and taking it from there. In fact, just a single tom will be fine. But a bodhran is what is typical if classically celtic, I suppose. Got any demos?

Those are all really loud instruments. Tabla won't cut through. A small cocktail kit would prolly work...and it goes without saying...some obligatory cowbell.

thats where maybe one smallish Taiko drum might be handy in case drum solos become a thing again, wish somebody would invent a foldable gong that really gets people's attention Roger Waters was quite the spectacle, banging the gong and howling like a monkey. Seemed to really get a good crowd too.. oh well maybe Arturia will bring out a digital gong the size of a hamster, but a bit louder..

Gongs are kind of pointless unless they are flaming

no demos yet, still trying to find a drummer. if I can't get one by january, I'm going to have some milk cartons printed up with a missing drummer picture with a big question mark over his face. I figure that will do it. otherwise I'm setting a series of snares in dark alleys with a 6 pack of malt liquor in the middle of the rope. I might be able to snag one, but i'll have to throw back a lot of winos and st.bernards..

I kinda understand why drum machines became very popular now.....

sunset can be substituted for flames, and is easier to put out...

from the traditional folk song "3 hamsters in a cave with a leaky ceiling knitting paw a new jumper" - original composer unknown, however ABKCO is prosecuting for trademark infringement if you try to sample it.

I'm just waiting for you to demonstrate how an accordion is going to be heard over a bagpipe- let alone a banjo.

I had one of those foldable gongs, but my issue with it was the sharp edges kept ripping through my back pocket until I until I made a special Kevlar case for it which was expensive. With my first foldable gong I sanded down the cut edges but then I could never get it back to form as those edges need to line up perfectly when unfolded.

If you are in the Cologne area and need a Kevlar case for your's, this lady did an amazing job for me, one Marianne Nölle. She used to be a nurse but now in retirement has all the time in the world.

some very good points of consideration in there, thank you for the wise words..

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to discuss this, but what the heck...
I'm considering a go-fund-me, I've been working with a couple material scientist (part time students off the clock) on a potentially game changing technology.

73% copper, 10% tin, 3% silver, and get this, 7% lycra Spandex. seems like a small number, but that spandex makes the Gong stretchable and foldable (just don't wash in hot water)

think of it a massive gong that will fit in a bowling ball bag and have room for a ham&swiss on rye(but no bowling ball, sorry). Truly revolutionary times comrade.

I may still look up Marianne, I'm considering having a Kevlar guitar case made but I want it double bagged with some sort of endangered species on the outside to give it that air of casual luxury, bullet proof, but sexy is what I'm going for..

let me know if you want in on the Gong Project, we still have a limited number of partnerships available, and we still need to come up with a name for the stretchy little devil..
