I dated #7 a bit over a month as this chunk falls into the holiday season and New Years and hopefully pads the time for those with obligations other than making music.

Ushio Shinohara is an interesting fellow. He's from what I gather focusing mostly on his process in his Neo-Dadaist way! I felt that the photo would churn up vastly different emotions as it makes quite the visual statement. My wife's reaction was "WHOA!!!".

@Radio : this reminds me of my older cousin…hes somewhere out there, i hope hes still alive. he has schizophrenia, when we were younger, he would just watch that Muhammed Ali movie with Will Smith on repeat and those vintage fights and interviews on youtube all day. he loved boxing, almost every conversation when he was on his medicine was about boxing. my cousins and some of the other guys in their neighbor would all practice sparring in their garage in the summer, because he had all the boxing equipment and his family lived in a nice neighborhood. i know way too much about Ali and Tyson because of him….i miss him

but yo anyways, theres an interesting idea here. you could’ve developed it more though, its not a race and theres more than month. you got a cheat code that it reminded me of my cousin though and it was still an interesting interpretation

 

A certain subject like boxing is probably very helpful when you're ill, because boxing is also about taking punches and giving punches, and especially getting back up when you're on the ground. Ali was a black man who belonged to the fringe group at the time.

Expanding, yes, you said it's true, unfortunately I don't have much time to devote to something like that for long.
I do sound design and that takes up all of my time, so unfortunately I can't devote any time to it.

Mohammed was the greatest! Nice celebration of his brilliance, intelligence and wit!

 

My friends and I were extras in the arena scenes when they filmed it. Will Smith was totally jacked up on steroids. He was fucking HUGE!

so yo what i understand about this one as an artist, is how important the process of creation is in regards to existing in the world. when you can release some of what you experience in the world in a song or whatever, and make something youre proud of, its a very empowering and cleansing thing imo

i wanted to capture this confident swag and sense of raw power, thats more controlled, harnessed and skillful; but also this tranquil, relaxing feeling that comes from releasing that emotional energy into your work. i used my physical instruments this time because the physicality of playing them, is the best way to represent that for me. overall stylistically since hes boxing, i wanted to make it like that funk in those old school bootleg martial arts movies

@Grape Ape on first hearing i struggled a bit with the rhythm but it seeped into my soul after a minute or so ! Unique sounding....check! Nice guitar riff....check! dreamer ending.... check! Nice one !!!

 

@Grape Ape awesome! love the rhythm! The fast picking reminds me of what i was trying to do with a koto sound on my initial effort, same with the vocal samples.

@Radio very cool like underground synth jazz or something. im terrible with genres. reminds me of the dust brothers fight club soundtrack for some reason- which i loved so thats def a compliment from me!

alright, well maybe it wasnt the most creative but i was like japanese dude, lets use some japanese instruments! and i just got this oto boum, first analog compressor/saturator/filter ive ever had so i thought i'd experiment with it by running every track through it in some capacity. then i started to add some combat effects/fight themed vocals but "kick punch its all in the mind!" kept coming into my head, so i decided that i had to do the right thing and attempt to remix some parappa the rappa. if you're not in the know thats an old school original playstation rhythm type game. i worked on it some, im not super stoked on it and its definitely too distorted for my liking, when i ran all the tracks through the oto that sounded ok but then on the master i think its too hot once limited. too much oto!

oh well, anyway i dont feel like i did it justice and also it went from the contest picture to a parappa the rappa song so i decided to try and make another song that fit better to me. so i did, and that one went the wrong direction for the pic so i paused working on that to start over again and THEN i made a song that fits ok to me. its sorta another john wick style alarm song i guess, i keep trying to squeeze in movie trailer effects into songs lol but this worked out ok i guess. i did all the tracks with the oto then the busses then the master, so its still heavy handed with like drive but a little more subtle than the parappa song (which im going to sit on a bit then go and try again just with the acapella). the beat is kinda like the focus before the windup, then the aftermath of throwing the punch.

two bonus oto songs, nothing to do with the contest lol sorry. ive been having a ton of fun mangling sounds with distortion but obviously no obligation to listen unless youre bored/curious about stuff like the oto boum. ive just been making simple beats and messing with it, im sure in more expert hands it shines a bit more. there is a glitch at the beginning of one of them, thats an error from soundclounds upload. ,

 

@macros mk2 : lol, yeah that shit sounds hella asian. but yo i think both went well with the image though, youre definitely getting stronger in that regards. the Parappa the Rapper one aesthetically and the one youre rocking with as an entry in its energy and atmosphere. i also dig that you kept trying till you got it right, definitely sounds better than the first attempt as a whole. the synth arp works really well in creating energy and i really like the outro kick that comes in. you did a great job

that hardware saturator sounds great to my ears also, i can definitely tell the difference from your previous cuts. its more warm and pleasant on the ears and adds depth to the tones; sounds really good imo, especially makes that bass gnarly asf
