Can you still buy and download previous version of Logic from App Store?

My friend has an early 2008 MacPro. He wants to buy and run Logic on that one. I have the same computer as well, with El Capitan (10.11) installed, that is running Logic 10.2 on it. As I remember you can update this computer to something like High Sierra, but not over. One thing is sure, you cannot update it to run the latest version of Logic. My friend has never purchased Logic from App store before. I want to know that in case we install High Sierra on that computer, and try purchasing Logic, can we still download an earlier version that will run on that computer?

Previously such things could be solved that when you got the notification in App Store: you need a newer version of Mac OS to run this and this software, you could go to iTunes, add that software to you App list, and then go back to App Store, then the notifications changed, and it offered to download the latest version for your device. I wonder if this workaround still works? But also it must be considered that he still needs to pay for the Logic first, I am not sure you can do that when adding to Apps in iTunes.

The only reason to be "stuck" at High Sierra is that Mojave requires a Metal Compliant GPU. You can update Logic to 10.4.8 on High Sierra. You need Mojave installed to update to Logic 10.5 or greater.

If he wants to pay 200$ for Logic, tell him to just buy Logic 11. Once he has paid for Logic, then contact Apple to play dumb like he thought v11 would work on his old machine "that he bought 11 for". They will give you a link to an older version of Logic he can install long before they will "unsell" him Logic 11. They just want their money. Or he could contact them first and ask about it. You do not need the App Store app or Itunes even installed to install Logic, once you have an installer for the version you are going to run.

Please do not waste other peoples' time here with more spurious questions and random scenarios like in your prior "hifi" thread.

Pirate Logic Pro 10.3, download the older library (or bits of it, whatever you want) using lpx_links.

That's what I did with my oold El Capitan Macbook, and it works just fine.

No, that will not work. You will not be able to buy Logic from that machine.

The App Store will only let you buy Logic (or any App Store app) on a machine that supports the minimum system requirement of the *current version* of that app - as of typing, this is Logic 11.1, who's minimum system requirements are Sonoma 14.4.

If you log in to your App Store account on someone else's Sonoma/Sequoia Mac and buy Logic, then you can go back to your old machine and download the purchase - the App Store will give you the most recent version of Logic that works on that system. However, there is no guarantee that the App Store still has downloads for versions that old, and if you're out of luck, you're unlikely to get Apple to give you your money back.

Why can't you then just copy logic from one to another mac if the pirated in not modified?

Thats actually very likely. I did it multiple times and even once with logic. The bouight version even keeps working but you cant update it anymore

Fine but the probem is my friend is a full time musician, and you know sometimes those pirate editions have glitches, I want to avoid anything like that to disturb his workflow, because I visit him once or twice a year, if something problematic reveals I won't be there to help. This time I would like to keep the version official.

But what about if we visit someone who has new Mac? If we log in there to my friend's Apple ID, purchase Logic, then go back to his older machine and open App Store, it will offer to download the earlier version to his computer, doesn't it? At least this also worked like that earlier when purchasing. I did not purchase anything for years though, so I don't know the new process.

Ahh, okay I see. Then I try to ask someone who may know about whether earlier versions are still downloadable.

if it really has to be a total legit copy, that is worth trying.

if it doesnt work, you can still pirate a working copy for your system, bcs you actual paid for it, if its really that moral difference, you are after.

it's a technical question, but it's also dripping with clickbait. They just gave Logic Pro X users Logic Pro 11 as a free update. Does this mean we have lifetime free updates now? Yes. They would need to rename the product to charge anyone again. But it has been 10 years or so, for Pro X already; and it costs $200 now. It was $150 in the past. If they have removed an old version from the app store; they would just give you a link or some other way to do it. What happens if you buy an older computer?

Read the first post again and tell me if this results in the same discussion topic. No-one still running Logic 10.2 on their own computer would really ask this question.

Unfortunately this is true. Especially because of this system that you need App Store to install something like Logic now. Very annoying. It was better in case of Logic 9, you could at least install it yourself if you had a license. This new new system is very upsetting.

In case of Logic, it works the same, there was never glitches between legit and non legit versions last 20 years or so, dunno what are you talking about really.

And in this case, nobody will help him either, he's going to run outdated version on outdated system and only answer he can expect for 200 bucks is to update his outdated everything. He will encounter old bugs, that will never get resolved and that's about it.

Are you serious now? Come on... The Logic that worked in 2012 and were used on computers of 2012, and with which everyone was producing who used Mac back then and produced successfully, why would that system not work now in 2024? Same Logic, same system. The electricity is different coming from the wall socket, and it messes Logic up today, or what? Mine, I set it up around those days, only use it for Logic, nothing else, no internet, no updating, it works flawlessly. Even a Logic 8 from a G5 Mac will work great. Time won't change the behavior of software. Of course there were bugs in them like there are bugs in everything, but me, for example I have never experienced a bug in it during normal workflow. And my friend is not such a professional with computers that he would max out the using of Logic. He won't use it more seriously than me, so very likely he will experience no bugs. He has been using Logic 9 for more than a decade and never heard him complaining about bugs. I heard about bugs in Logic before, know particular ones, but there are levels between users, not everyone is likely to find a bug. At east when you press New, Add a track, Record, then Add a new track and Record, then place some basic plugins, during such a basic workflow you will hardly experience a bug. If you would, Logic would have been dropped out of business long ago, because it is not good even for such a basic workflow.

And why is it such a big surprise that I am trying to get that old Logic? A new Mac computer costs a lot of money, there is that machine I mentioned for free, the Logic version I mentioned worked and were used on it back in the days by thousands of users, why is it such a big surprise one would like to use it again for that purpose? I think you mix up things here: The big surprise is not that someone is willing to do so, but that you can't do it because that damn version is no more available, and Apple decided not to distribute Logic X as independent software but as part of App Store, and now it is gone. And just because of that, the functioning computer is useless because you cannot find the software for it. I have Logic 9 with a license, if I want to use it I buy an old Mac install it and use it, just as every normal human would do who paid money for a software. This scenario is only a surprise recently when everything is tied to App Store and Apple can decide if you can use your computer that you paid for after a while or not.

About piracy: I read about instability issues from users using pirated Logic. Never went into investigating it seriously, maybe a rumour. Have no idea. But me, when I had a pirated Spectralayers pro, you couldn't edit multiple layers with it for example, because once you edited a layer, the other disappeared, and you could not get it back. So we can debate about whether to use pirated logic or not, but I mentioned I want to buy it, I am interested if you still can do so with the old version. Why complicating this with directing this topic to whether using pirated or not? I clrealy expressed it is not the way I want to go this time.

some years back it was possible to install some older MacOS version and get the versions of AppStore apps "latest" compatible with that older MacOS, I doubt it still works

Wtf are you on about, read again what you said and what is responded to you:

    1. Non legit Logic have same glitches as legit, it's not issue like in other DAW's where there's tons of patching, emulations of licensers, time bombs or stuff like that.

    2. Getting official version will not grant him support, because they don't support outdated systems or versions, nothing will change for him, if he reach out to Apple, they will tell him to update everything and that's about it.

    3. I don't care which version you will use, I just told you that either way you aren't getting anything out of it except doing right thing, so again, no glitches and no official support.

Explaining it shot as you still don't get it:

    1. He don't need support from Apple. Ignore that. It is not an issue. We don't need it.

    2. Don't want the pirated version. Leave it to my choice. Thanks. I am not against anyone using pirated software, personally I don't find it a moral issue like it is anti-propagated in the Software world, but this time however I would like to stick to the official one. Let me have my choice, thanks!
