Chasing Horizons (cinematic orchestral)

    Hello all, Chasing Horizons is my latest cinematic/hybrid orchestral piece.

    It started with the rhythmic, percussive motif you hear at 2:25, then worked its way back, in a sense. It describes the longing to achieve aspirations, where each goal reached only reveals another, and fulfillment forever remains on the horizon.

    I'm saying the last word first. Your music is a kind of worn-out cliche. Now everyone who talks about film, cinematic, whatever music or scoring means this music model. Mostly repetitive music with simple themes embellished with orchestral instruments. These musics usually don't create many emotions in the listener. You may get the deep admiration of some people because of the way you used orchestral instruments, but musically it is nothing but noise and simple repetitive patterns.
    These music models started in the 2010s, and the reason was the inspiration of music creators from electronic music and the gradual availability of sampled orchestral tools to the public. Electronic music mostly uses some concepts and names for their music sections and parts and the different parts of your music model are very similar to the same concepts of electronic music.
    Orchestral music (which you put your music under this category) should be something that AI cannot recreate. But unfortunately, due to the lack of familiarity of film music writers with real orchestral music, the final music made by them doesn't express anything special and usually harass the listener more than making them feel good.

    Orchestration is not Composition.

    Orchestrators and arrangers have tried a lot to put themselves in the place of composers by playing with the sounds of musical instruments, but in reality, such a thing will never happen.

    Very interesting first post ever, @Incontro.

    Thanks for sharing your perspective - it’s always good to hear diverse views on music. This piece includes variation in melody, motif, dynamics, rhythm, texture, and instrumentation. My aim was to create a 4-minute piece for listeners to enjoy, not an extended symphonic suite, so the opportunity for development was naturally limited. Repetition has been a feature of music since time immemorial and remains a useful and necessary technique found in nearly all genres and across all platforms. I don’t understand your objection to it in this context.

    I enjoy electronic music as well, and see no issue in borrowing form or concepts from one branch of music to another. Of course, I describe this piece as “cinematic orchestral” because it is exactly that term which conveys its style and intent to most listeners.

    Not all music resonates with everyone, and it seems my style doesn’t align with your preferences. That’s perfectly fine. To avoid further frustration, it might be best to focus on music styles you find more enjoyable.

    Yeah coz the likes of Morricone, Steiner, Williams, Shostakovich et al wouldn't know the arse end of an oboe from a kazoo.

Dismissing a piece as “nothing but noise” or “simple repetitive patterns” doesn’t really help—it just feels discouraging, especially when the person clearly just wanted to share and connect with the community.

    Yeah, cinematic music and usage of orchestral sample libraries are popular, and maybe it’s not your thing, but brushing off someone’s effort because it doesn’t match your idea of “real music” is pretty unhelpful. Not every piece is trying to be groundbreaking or fit into a rigid framework. Sometimes it’s just about having fun, experimenting, and learning.

    If you didn’t like it, that’s fair, but constructive feedback goes a long way. Instead of tearing someone down with broad, elitist comments, maybe try pointing out specific things they could work on.

    OP, i thought its a fun song! would love for it to be more "hybrid" even. You have the orchestral bed down. Layering in some glitchy percussion, wavetable synth growls, creepy detuned piano plucks etc would take it to another level! heres a loose example of what i mean. Different style track overall, but you can hear the blend of orchestral and synth stuff.

    very cool! love this one. What software / plugins do you use? Do you use a dedicated notation program, or just good ole fashioned midi?

    Thanks @shinyzen! Pleased you like it.

    It's all done in Reaper, and with MIDI notation throughout. The instruments are all Kontakt (Forzo, Nucleus, C Hein various, Albion Tundra, NI Action Strikes...). In this track I used a couple of samples by GHack for the Braams. For FX, I only use Fabfilter.
