Does anyone here use it? They have some really great sounds in the packs for it.

    Hmm what does Soundpaint again?

Its a plugin yes, but what does it do? does it create audio on itself without samples?

    I
It's like UVI Falcon and Kontakt player, it has it's own packs. I'm assuming it's made by 8Dio.

Been using soundpaint for about a year now. They update the engine somewhat regularly and honestly the prices for some of the libraries are pretty good!

A couple issues I have with it:

    - High CPU usage. Much higher than Kontakt from my experience (using similar 10GB piano libraries). Not as high as UVI Workstation/Falcon iirc.

    - "Infinite velocity layers blah blah blah"
Bullshit. The lowest velocity layer on the piano library I bought (1990 C7?) is MUCH higher than what is offered by both Hammers and Waves. With that said it does feel good to play.

    - Sampling inconsistencies and odd layering mechanics. The piano I bought has certain velocity layers where the transients sound super odd (artificial). After messing with soundpaint a bit more I realized that the piano is broken into 3 or 4 independent sample layers (attack, sustain, noises) all using different samples and layered on top of each other. It just sounds so weird sometimes. Natural instrument libraries will (most likely) not sound as good as Kontakt counterparts.

    The good -

    - A lot of flexibility for layering and morphing between sounds (haven't fully explored it yet)

    - Effects are quite good

    - Non traditional instrument libraries seem quite good (the free Adastra Ambiences is great!)

    - Free engine! And libraries are pretty cheap.

    - Polyphonic Legato? (I think) Troels talked about it with the saxophone libraries? Seems like it could offer quite a bit more than some Kontakt/Uvi libraries.

Overall I'm pretty mixed about it. Couldn't see myself spending more money on I because the Piano I bought was disappointing. Natalie Tannenbaum demoed the new string library and it sounded quite good, but also quite artificial at some points (w/ individual tracks soloed).

    Hope that helps someone.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Which CPU are you referring to? :dunno:

As with the recent Yamaha plugin and seemingly endless comments about CPU, it would be very helpful if you added this info. so other members can gauge the relevancy of the feedback :winker:

    Cheers

No, I will give it like 2 or 3 more years and 8Dio and its SoundPaint will die.
    It's not competitive anymore.

I completely understand what you mean and I'll try to share some more info, but when referring to higher CPU usage I'm fairly certain that it's going to higher across the board for all CPUs I have in my systems (at least for the non ARM chips I have).

The actual CPU isn't going to matter much unless it lacks some sort of modern instruction set that would cripple the performance of Soundpaint.

It also could be that the cracked version(s) of Kontakt I have are more lightweight than the legit version, or that the Kontakt library I'm comparing the Soundpaint library to is simply better scripted and more efficient. So I guess there's a lot more factors than CPU anyways.

    My CPUs:

    - Intel Xeon E5-2667v2 (MacOs Catalina)
    - Intel i7-10700 (Hackintosh Big Sur)
    - Intel i7-4870HQ (2015 MBP running Big Sur)
    - Ryzen 7 5700G (Windows 10 Home)

CPU usage is significantly higher using legit Soundpaint compared to Kontakt 5 and 6 (Trazor, HCiSO, Bobdule) for similar instrument libraries.

I had it installed for a while, just with the free libraries. I never really used it beyond that initial "just installed" phase. So now it's uninstalled.

It's never going to survive in the long term. Kontakt and the free Kontakt player conquers all.

I see, I just discovered it. I have 8dio kontakt packs but I though SoundPaint was a new DAW lol.
Damn another CPU hog, glad I got a 64gb ram.

Nothing lags so far, UVI seems like a cpu hog for sure.

I'n definitely dabbling with it, some nice sounds.

The price of the content is probably the selling point though, they arent that expensive at all.

They are ROMplers, and not some gargantuan programming feat like Kontakt (or Falcon). It's to protect their samples. I doubt that is the direction many people who are their target market will want to go.

Back in 2011 I burned all the samples onto CD/DVD, because what you have is what you have.

My 3 phases: First you had too few samples - then you probably had the right amount of samples, but there were always such great new interesting sounds - then you had too many samples and the chaos began.

Even bigger hard drive. Even more folders and data. Label all folders and sort them by topic, like in the book library by subject area.

Then I discovered sound fonts (SF2) and sound font players. Then MIDI and wave tables came along and more and more virtual software synthesizers. The sound designers were also busy and the preset collection grew bigger and bigger. Then Spectrasonics came along with its Keyscape and Omnisphere. Then a new Native Instruments Kontakt library almost every day. In the end, UVI Falcon and Eastwest with Play were added.

Then I started backing up all the data and no longer burned CDs and DVDs but BluRays and everything needs to be labeled.A lot of work and money to back up your musical treasures, or the starting point for making music. A new operating system from Windows 95 to Windows 11 or a hard drive crash then led to a new installation and at least 3 weeks of installing the burned BluRays every day.

Now I have bought 2 large SSDs because they are easier to find data and can be stored safely in the long term. Conclusion: Data overkill!!! But a complete selection, the full range of music! You would have to have several lives to play through everything.
