anyone willing to share a list of addresses to put in your host file to block access to programs that shouldn't be able to access the internet without your permission?

you should have a firewall that allows everything to be blocked by default, and then only allow things you specifically want to. blocking things in a host file is a very 2005 approach

mass blocking ad & malware does make general sense (as next's posts suggests) but blocking software piece by piece really does not

 

That's more so what im looking to do. I do have avast security installed which of course has a firewall. I'm 40 though bro, its still 2005 to me damn it lol. Thank you for both of your responses though yall are awesome. I'm about to look into your suggestions now Next.

 

You should use Little Snitch or LuLu firewall. Also, take a look at Radio Silence k'd. Hosts is a very good way to block web domains still. There is no downside to using it, unless you count blocking websites you may need to go look at. Unblocking something in that instance takes about 30 seconds and no reboot is required.

Personally, I would ditch Avast. You have better options available.

EDIT ...no huge hosts file dont slow down it rather acelerate browser i guess but for sure it does not slow down anything
