This is just my selfish reminder for a future reference, of a specific use case scenario where Apple gets wrecked at fraction cost,

modelling/capture amp sims like IK Multimedia Tonex and Neural Amp Modeler can use nVidia CUDA acceleration, so the whole process is about 10x faster than any Apple Mac

PS: mental note to myself, I can no longer advice people to avoid nVidia graphics cards when building desktop DAW PCs because that CUDA potential for audio tasks is incredible

I just know that a colleague of mine who does video animations and graphics in After Effects and Premiere does not want to work without nVidia and CUDA.
    He's a jerk

still with this ? Ive been in both worlds
Final word: Im using both, each one is king on different situations so as users we should be using the best. Only issue you gotta be good with computers on PCs.

I just wish such nice OS (MacOS) wasn't made by such sucky company. Well, not like Microsoft isn't sucky, too. and Windows isn't so bad. it's ok.

I have to use both for business reasons, and I use Linux for pleasure (everything+making music). :P

Speaking of Apple, the problem with it has always been closed hardware, although you can put all three main OSes on their computers if you really want it. PC - absolutely no problem with that, and it can also run MacOS if you really want it, but big majority of people just stick to what works easily - buy a computer and use what's on it. :( well you can't expect everybody to be so proficient with computers. That's what these sucky companies count on.

Hell, people find it hard installing any OS on their computers... :(

    This isn't issue.

For me personally, the issue is giving a lot of money for something I can't change over time.

    Apple's more about
    - We know what's best for you.

    And building PC is
    - I know what I want and need

And the eternal question of what is better, the question is wrong.
Ask yourself what is most useful for you and what will help you get ahead. Or ask yourself what can I afford?

How you interpret the following numbers is up to you.

    1. Apple number of employees ------------> 161,000 - sales 383 billion USD - market share 73.4 percent
    2. Microsoft number of employees ---------> 221,000 - sales 211 billion USD - market share 15.5 percent
    3. Linux (Red Had) number of employees ----> _19,000 - sales 168 million USD - market share -4.48 percent

Even if it would be half the speed I would anytime prefer to work with macOS.

Please cite your sources. And as you can see, these are very similar numbers. Don't be so petty!

Rather than an argument against Apple, this is an argument for Nvidia and against IK imo.

IK could have targeted WGPU, OpenCL, or any other compute-shader-supporting arch. The training part would've performed equally fast on AMD and would've been reasonably easy to port to Apple as well. Instead, they chose CUDA and in the end had to write two implementations anyway (CPU & CUDA).

In a similar vein, here's another brilliant vendor lock-in own-goal by Waves:

"Waves v15 plugins are not compatible with Ryzen 3/5/7."
    "Sorry, what?"
"Well, you see, we decided not to develop our own reasonably performant math operations and opted to use Intel's Math Kernel Library instead (which Intel has a history of using as a backdoor to cripple performance on AMD). Accordingly, we do not support running Waves Clarity plugins on anything but Intel and Ryzen 9."
    "That doesn't even make sense!"

No, that's not a joke. This is from the Waves FAQ for v15 and support staff on VI-C.

Note that with very few exceptions, very little computationally expensive regular DAW/plugin work can be offloaded to the GPU. You can - but it'll be slower than on the CPU.

This is why having different systems is the best scenario. Here's my setup for example:
    1. Custom Windows Desktop for main loads and CUDA apps. For a workstation, nothing beats putting exactly what you want in a build.
    2. M1 MacBook Pro for dev, everyday tasks, and Logic/Final Cut (I still love their workflows). Battery life is unmatched for media work on the go(new Qualcomm may be a challenger if it survives litigations).
    3. Custom Linux NAS/Server for backups/sync, file servers, and docker containers. FUN FACT, more than 90% of the internet is run on Linux. Until Bitwig, it still sucked for musicians.
    Summary: Its a TEAM EFFORT!

I only use 1 Windows system for everything!

Unfortunately my PC can't cook or clean yet, so dear industry, where is my house robot?

frankly that's relatively similar to my setup,
1 - desktop PC workstation (rather dated, but perfectly sufficient, Windows 11 no problems)
2 - laptop MacBook Pro (rather old, basically a glorified tablet, capable of all the casual tasks on the go)
3 - Synology NAS(es) for reliable backup, sync, SMB...
4 - Proxmox as VM and Docker host for various testing, services etc...

that said, I'm not convinced expanding that setup broader, I'd rather learn proper "audio homelab" config but that's still beyond my free time nowadays

Tesla Robot out by 2026. The debut was both amazing and weird. I'm definitely getting one if they can have it ready to do laundry at launch.
