Kind of like an arppegiator but using the sound like a gate. So a rhythmic gate.

    izotope stutteredit
sugarbytes has a decent stutter module in turnado too you can use as a controllable gate.

depending on which daw you use, quite a few of them have a midigate effect or trancegate built in

    gate apps can sound clicky

Antares filter has a gate section and is nice. looks a bit mental to start with but is great - has two gates can be assigned to anything

but they dont make it any more

    ---

effectrix is second choice - get the version with a serial the cracks always fail on my computer ater a few weeks.

Not sure the exact effect you are looking for but -- SugarBytes Thesys may be worth checking out.

just thought it worth mentioning that i used to do this by hand back in the days of cakewalk pro 3.

1.write a midi pattern of notes that is the pattern of gating you want.
2.copy the track and offset the copy by the note length u want, ie-16th notes you would offset the copy by a 16th note
3.transform both tracks midi data from note on's to volume commands (controller 7)
4.set the values of the copied track volume commands to 0
5.set the volume of the original track's volume commands to the level u want the "on" gates to be at, u can fade in and out gates etc by using a range of values.

if you needed more than one note value during the gating pattern, u make another 2 gate tracks for each note length, then cut the various gate length tracks like comping a vocal track, if ya get me ;D

doing gating like that was actually quite useful, it gave a huge amount of control over it, then you realise you can apply the same technique to any controller, and things get very intresting indeed.
almost forgot to mention, it was done using 3 tracks of course, 1 for the actual melodic midi, and 2 for the gates, all set to the same midi channel.

Question with a thousand answers. The 'best' choice depends on you DAW. Sony Acid has a built in snipper/gatter. You could use volume envelopes or dummy chain in Ableton.

My personal favorite rhythmic gate is in Torq. It can be accessed in a DAW via rewire or just record the effect and import. I could go on and on.

Electronisounds Ubergate is a vst effect plugin that uses a gate pattern editor to get a variety of different gated effects on any audio or midi track. I think that maybe something like this is what you are looking for.

Gateboy which was by sinevibes before they got a graphic designer was perfect.
