Nice set there, but I have to again ask, WHY do you shift the pitch of the sound all over the place on most patches?
I understand that many patches are not pitch-specific, and there is good reason to shift SOME.
But when I browse the patches with a bassline playing and your patches are OUT OF TUNE it sounds terrible.
When doing pitch spreads, do you listen to the resulting core pitch and adjust?

As someone with typical pitch sensitivity it seems obvious that something is amiss here, as I do not experience this issue with any other presets I have used.
Does my issue make sense to you?
Is there some reason to shift so many from the default pitch?

 

Dear @DoubleTake, you are the first and only user I know who has a "pitch sensitivity". If I remember correctly, you have asked this question before with other soundsets. This is kang shaping and all the controls and functions of the Silk VSTi were used to create new sounds or presets, that's what software synthesizers are for.


Sonicbits - Silk Short Review (English)

The Silk sounds good and is available for little money 19 $ EUR. The user interface (GUI) is exemplary and clearly designed. All parameters and controls are very easy to use and easy to see. The Silk is also scalable for modern 4K monitors 80%, 90%, 100%, 110%, 125%, 150%, 175%, 200%. The sharpness and color selection are very well done. A great GUI to my taste.

The manual can even be accessed via the interface in the system button, for beginners it is a well thought out virtual software synthesizer with 3 oscillators (2x saw and 1x noise), spread and blend function plus detune - 99 & + 99, range -24 & +24. There are 7 filter types to choose from, even a 6 LP filter and formant filter with A E I O U has been thought of. The modulation envelope and the modulation matrix invite you to create new sounds.

With the 2 LFO low frequency oscillators you can create floating sounds and also rhythmic sound images. The 2 LFOs have sine, saw, square, triangle and S&H waveforms. The rate for the LFO is equipped with SYNC and FREE, which can be edited with the RATE function 0.01 Hz to 40.00 Hz and the DEPTH function 1 to 100. The 3 effects chorus, delay and reverb sound good and give the sound more space and fullness.
There is a pitch wheel and a mod wheel function for your MIDI keyboard.

 

Most people have the kind of pitch sensitivity I am talking about, which is why i called it "typical".
My pitch sensitivity has to do with playing an A on the keyboard and hearing a C instead of an "A".
Some may have such sensitivity that the slightest difference in Hz offends their ears, but that might be considered a dysfunction, and that is not what i am talking about.
This is also not about detuning within one half-step usually for detuning and fattening-type results, but shifting the pitch by one-half to several steps, so that as i mentioned, one might play a "C" on the keyboard and the result is a G.
In the past I went through a couple of your preset packs and re-pitched many or them, leaving fine tuning alone, but just returning some pitch adjustments to "0". Of course some are, for the most part, atonal, or have an effect that is lost by zeroing out one or more oscillators, so again those I left alone.
But the ones that make me hurl my eggs & sausage onto the console...

Creativity is great, but there are conventions and standards most people follow.
However different standards may vary across cultures and genres, MOST people expect to hear something that, if it has a discernible pitch, aligns with the scale notes of that particular culture or genre.

I guess your patch bundles are just not "my thing".
Certainly a good patch is worth tweaking, but my be overlooked if it is so out of pitch-step.

I'm not referring to this particular Soundset since I don't have the necessary VSTi, but this very issue with the random preset pitch has been driving me crazy for years. It's as pervasive throughout the industry as it's inherently absurd.

It's been literally everywhere: software synths, hardware synths, factory presets, synth patches, samples, commercial soundsets both by the developer or a third party, free soundsets... everyfreakingwhere.

There's nothing more disruptive to my workflow than sifting through presets only to find that every third or fourth preset or whatever is not just useless, but instant vibe and inspiration killer, like a bitter walnut or almond.

I can't find any justification for it and I don't care for any that may be offered. I'm no longer buying any commercial product that is plagued that way and I'm not using any free offerings. As soon as I stumble upon the second preset with the rotten pitch the whole set/plugin goes into the trashcan. It's just not worth it, life's too short.

 

VSTi = Virtual Studio Technology Instrument

These plugins are instruments, and the presets are factory presets that are only meant to demonstrate what you can do with them or what sounds are possible.

As with all instruments, it's essential to learn and practice them until you can create your own music with them or play a song.

 

I understand, and I didn't mean to be disrespectful to you and your efforts.

However, as an example, guitar used to be my first instrument. If any of my electric guitars occasionally and randomly required a full retune as a result of me turning on a pedal effect or changing the position of pickup selector, either the pedal would fly out the window or the guitar would be assigned firewood duties, depending on the culprit.

It has nothing to do with learning or practising. I know how to move up or down the neck. I just want me to decide if and when to do it and not be randomly subjected to someone else's mindfuckery right in the middle of a creative process.

 

It's nice that you're writing something from real life for once.

If you don't like the presets, you should learn the skill to create your own—you learned guitar, after all. Learning synthesis isn't possible for everyone, though. If you need samples or presets, you're dependent on good presets that work for you. I can understand you, and this saying has always held true: "Things that don't work just make life difficult."

But before you freak out and lose your temper, you should solve the problem permanently. It will save you and your loved ones' nerves.
You have too low a threshold and too little resilience, and you destroy what annoys you. Burning guitars into firewood is a sign of sheer stupidity. Learn to approach things a little more calmly.

 

In spite of my colourful presentation style there is a constructive core in what I wrote. I made it perfectly clear that it was an industry wide issue and that otherwise I had nothing bad to say about you and your efforts. You could have taken it as such, but you chose to take my words literally and make it unnecessarily personal. Your condescending attitude is duly noted.

 

You are a very difficult person who sometimes doesn't tolerate criticism, and your conclusions are wrong! Please accept other opinions that don't agree with yours. We humans are all individuals with our own minds.

I understand the problem with the presets you describe. From your user perspective, it's certainly not helpful and a bad experience not to get the presets you want. I also find very few of other sound designers' presets good, usually three out of 128, so I started creating my own in 2010. I learned synthesis and have created 231 sound sets with 144 different VSTi's so far.

How do you convince sound designers to create other presets? They do what they can and do, and some presets are usable and others aren't. I only buy music from bands I like, but it's not up to me to dictate what kind of music they should make. Some bands, of course, look for ways to make money and play the music that sells well.

One more example: If they or a company commissions me to create sound design, i.e., presets, with the requirement not to use pitch or octave, I will say yes or no if the money is right.
