Ok. Listened to some released charli xcx. The "POP" music genre/demographic that her stuff targets would be (my best guess) ages 12-18 teen female? The simplistic and plasticine nature of all of her stuff is reminiscent of what we used to call in the biz "teeny bopper pop". Only back in the day it was less cookie cutter sounding. Can't say it's my cup of tea, but Ms. Xcx seems to be making some sort of living with her stuff and has a fanbase she caters to... Although if I were her I would be taking the cash she is making NOW, and investing wisely because she becomes less credible as an artist in this genre the older she becomes.

Personally I can still listen to the likes of Chem Bro's, Prodigy, FSOL, GrooveRider, Crystal Method, EBTG, FunkRiders, Massive Attack, Orbital, UnderWorld, etc, that was catering to the same crowd in the late 90's and 00's. Even Dubstep given the proper mood. However her stuff on the whole as well as the rest of the current offerings of the same genre all seem much too harmonically simplistic, unoriginal (cookie cutter template like), and very one dimensional rhythmically. The way this genre is produced these days it seems like they all use the same production template which makes a lot of it sound redundant. Just my op...

Yeah, but with nowhere near this kind of impact, which interestingly was quite organic. Anyway, it was the PC Music guys behind the scene that did it, so there is still hope for bedroom producers everywhere!

yah for sure, i still think she had a large impact prior to this. Shes been featured on a ton of tracks, and has been appearing in countless dj sets for years now. Maybe not as impactful as brat summer, but still. I also wouldnt call her recent rise to the top as organic, she had a lot of eyes on her due to her recent features, both on her stuff, and her featuring on other's songs. It is crazy to see the rise of AG Cook. I remember discovering him when he had like 100 followers on soundcloud lol.

 

I meant organic in the way the album grew. They didn't chuck piles of money at it, and it kind of exploded globally out of a niche club scene in London.

yah... they absolutely did. Im not sure how much they chucked at it, but i know for a fact it had a budget, and id be willing to bet it was a large one.

 

Anybody with a record deal has a budget, but nothing like the huge promo budgets Chappell Roan, Olivia Rodrigo and the other big popstars in the USA have. Charli's success was mostly based on innovation, and it would be really funny if she went on to win the Grammy award.

i cant say... innovation is the word... its literally techno sounds... made it from a producer not her... i dont get this... if i have to bet, id say universal/sony whatever company, need money.

 

Brat is influenced by PC Music/Hyperpop which has been an underground music genre for the past 10 years. Although there was label support, her discography from a previous 5 record deal never suggested that she was going to be major global star. so I don't think a huge promo budget would have been available for the launch of Brat. It was more of a viral marketing campaign via word of mouth and generating hype in the music press.

Nice to see someone implicitly going to bat for this insanely influential crew. All the people hating are akin to grandma turning off MTV because its not big band. If you’re in this forum, you probably /want/ to be a successful producer, so why not take the time to check out what the kids are into ? Ag cook is a crazy visionary. All the sophie stuff released while she was alive is game changing. Charli xcx made one of the biggest albums of the year. For your own sake, get into it

 

I think the business model is quite interesting, and it's within reach of any talented bedroom producer.
