Continuous adjustment doesn't seem like a good idea to me :woot:

It's what riders are doing, so not an uncommon effect but a different thing than gain staging.
But I'm not sure if this one rides too. My comment referred to this https://maxforlive.com/library/device/4571/volume-compensator short clip and it looks like but I'm absolutely not sure.

It better works good, otherwise it's useless. [IMG]

It should work well with clean digital compressors but since many 'analog emulation plugins' have a saturation stage at the input, it would be a good practice to also link the Threshold and Makeup/Output Gain.

    Happy to hear that!
Unfortunately all compensating plugins (M4L at least) cannot compensate latency of the heavy project.
Idea to make adjustment and compensate with Gain plugin, then switch off Volume Compensator patch. Actually what for to keep it running when you work with other plugins on other tracks.

how ? with which values ?
    ----
thread confuses me more and more :hillbilly::knock:
just wanted to not continue betray myself when compressing and realized it seem in my favour for my approaches in compression that i dont do classic recording genres

"Gain riders" may look like compressors.
But their structure is more for "consistency" than pure "mixing".
    No mojo (on purpose)

You fix a level to match, and the "rider" try his best to match it (down AND up).
    Without any other sound modification.

Use example : voice interview, with ppl moving their head around the mic
    Fast and effective

Here is one plugin for free, with "human perception" option :
    https://plugins4free.com/plugin/3617/

So NO, gain riders are not (really) compressors with auto gain

It's definitely not a one fits all and you need to gain stage the input level so that the threshold and output macros work together with ideally different macros with different custom range for the different ratios... but it's worth doing the work with an oscillator and pink noise to calibrate your favorite compressors. In short, it's complex to have a "perfect compensation" and that's why these plugins that listen to the input and output and adjust the volume by analyzing several measures simultaneously can be very useful.
