Is this amount of hiss "normal" in a 1997 Rode NT2?

those free hosts add a suffix to the link you have to delete. this one is the "/file " characters at the end, and you also have to paste the corrected url directly into your browser.

usually "hiss" is a function of too much gain, or a result of a background noise being made more apparent like a fan or other white noise source. Try adjusting your gain down, and look at your waveform in a frequency analzyer to look for peaks in certain bandwidths that can be filtered out.

that sounds like a bad capacitor, they give you that whooshing roar, not your normal hiss.
I'd return it if you can..

Sure. The mic with original capacitors from '97... Capacitors older than 5-10 years are usually good to replace. I'd "recap" it myself, like I did with my Sennheiser MD431 from about '98. It's usually easy with mics and they have only a few caps. Just look for a good quality Japanese - Panasonic capacitors. Any good electronics shop should have them. A bit more expensive but worth it.

Since it's very old, "recaping" it is a great thing to do, anyway, and see if it helps. ;)

It's a good thing to do if the original price is right. Some of the best deals in used audio gear are things you have to do a minor repair that the seller thought would be a major repair. Conversely, if the necessary power supply is not available but the seller assures you that is all that is wrong? That means it is as dead as a doornail.

You simplify it in the way that 25 years is "very old" and don't even distinguish between electrolytic or foil capacitors... It's far more complicated.
