these strategies are possibly misremembered from my playthroughs 30+ years ago, but
make sure to hunt enough to have too much food, stop travelling if people get sick (they should recover), and if you get held up by the mountains and can't make it before winter, try hunkering down in place and wait until spring (another reason to want enough food)

 

Right thats what I learned, I was like um if I was sick I'd rest a day or 2.. as a kid a I just pressed on and died hahah
