Having read a few pink floyd books and listened to many interviews of the band members, one thing often noted is David Gilmour's ability to play in the style of others. This was one of (many) the factors in offering him a position in the band replacing Syd Barett on guitar.

When playing in the Floyd, I've never noticed obvious lifted riffs or other 'tells' that show where Gilmour got his unique style, but one track does stand out. The live version of Fat Old Moon, especially the Gdansk live show recording.

    here's the youtube

I ripped the audio from this, which I thought was less than optimal. The performance was too fast and sounded a bit flat, so I slowed it down and added some reverb to thicken the audio. I like my track more better, if someone has a good file hosting site, let me know and I'll upload my remixed track.

Anyhow the point is Gilmours gutar work on this track sounds so much like Jimi Hendrix, and it would have been written around the time of Hendrix's peak before his death, its the only case I find of this particular style by Gilmour. Its a great cope of Hendrix's style, and a wonderful tune.

Just wonder if anybody else ever noticed, david playing Jimi.

To me that sounds nothing like Jimi. Nice melodic lead and tone but not even close to Hendrix.

Sure, David Gilmour is the king of slowness, a player who doesn't play much and would never think of using spectacular tappings or sweeps. But when it comes to his left hand, there is no one who can hold a candle to him in terms of bends, vibrato and tone. If you don't believe it, compare his solo of 'Comfortably Numb' with the cover version by Dream Theater on YouTube. The difference in class becomes more than clear.

Technique is not just virtuosity and the ability to play the right note at the right time, but the sound of the whole, the personality. And Gilmour's playing has a lot of that. This is supported by the fact that (even though his former band Pink Floyd stands for innovation and experimentation) he doesn't take too many risks when it comes to guitar playing.

The cobbler sticks to his last, plays what he can and lets others experiment with strange scales and crazy techniques. Gilmour found his way early on, which means playing little, but playing it right. His frequent and unconventional use of the bending technique and his use of the vibrato arm are the only things worth looking at more closely. The rest is standard: a little slide here, a bit of legato there, and that's about it. So let's concentrate on the two most striking features.

    James Marshall Hendrix 27. November 1942 - † 18. September 1970.
He died too early and too young; who knows what kind of music we would have received from him.

Just saw Gilmour on 10/30 @ Hollywood Bowl. A bucketlist concert, a life changing concert. He is incredible, still! @Radio is correct no sweeping techniques or crazy fretboard tricks, it's just about hitting the right notes on the guitar at the right time.

so check out jimi at Around 1:25 and forward on Axis bold as love - the double picking used in surf guitar is speed picked like the pick was dipped in peruvian nose powder.. also the use of the lower string phrases I find similar.

its not an exact copy of this hendrix solo, an thats not what I'm saying, I'm saying the "style" or choice of phrases and techinque are very similar, though both are beautiful in their own right..

The stuff about 6 minutes in on the Gdansk performance is very Henrixesque to me..
