I'm making a game and trying to market the steam page so I was just wondering where you guys tend to hear about games you might be interested in. Websites? Twitter? Just browsing steam?

 

Personally i go to webpages,ign, game20.gr and because i am a Linux user i mostly visit gamingonlinux.com

 

Steam and YT for me. I like RPGs (among other genres), so sometimes I'll go to YT and search "new single-player rpgs," then sort by date. That way I can see the graphics and play style in action (when I can find a YouTube gamer that's not annoying as hell). Then I can go look it up on Steam, already knowing it's something I may like to purchase.

 

YouTube most of the time. Since YouTube gamers typically play the newest, most trendy, and popular games, people are more likely to watch them. Some of them also play niche games, which is exactly the type I like

 

Can you tell me some of the youtubers who play niche games?

 

There used to be a site called Crackwatch back in the days, maybe there's a fork or somthing.
It showed any current and past game + if it got cracked or not and if so, which team did it.

Games that were listed there were basically good games, worth a try.

 

I like gematsu for news. Other than that, YouTube and Twitter ads have been weirdly effective for me when it comes to indie games. Getting YouTuber coverage might be difficult, especially if you don't have any clout. I would recommend getting a demo out and documenting the process as a devlog on YouTube/TikTok, that has been a very effective method of advertising lately.

Seriously, I discover new games by accident on You Tube, and these are not some high-budget games.

GOG newsletter, they often send me emails with news.

 

Go to a magazine store and look at all the game magazines - write down the names and research the editorial addresses. Apply to the responsible editorial and publications department. You can do the same with online game magazines, create a file where you write down all the addresses and information.
Sell and market yourself well, it's a lot of work, but if you're tenacious and stick with it and don't be lazy, your product/products will be bought, because only quality prevails in the long run, and you'll be successful. Maybe an interview with a game magazine editor. You can also send samples of your work. Expand your horizons, learn, but don't overwhelm yourself.

 

For me, a lot of it is from YouTubers, and also Steam too. I tend to stick to a couple genres.. and YouTubers often make a "top 20 <genre> coming in 2024" videos that let me know what's coming soon.. then I'll wishlist them. I have caught wind of some games via Twitter (or X, if you want) too.

FightinCowboy is one YouTuber I stumble on a lot for the genres I like most (Metroidvanias and souls-likes). He does mainly walkthroughs.

Someone mentioned FitGirl, possibly as a joke, but that is seriously one way I find out about games. I find out probably about more there than anywhere else. I do buy most of my games, as long as they're priced well. That said, you probably don't really want your game to end up there, but it is marketing too.. lol

 

I just find them through YT channels from people that have tastes similar to mine and that I start to trust over time to have good opinions. For me it's the quickest way to get a decent judgement since I'll be getting gameplay too. I don't use any random YT channel to find games though because a lot of reviews are "incentivized", like what's happening with Dragon Age Veilguard.

For indie games I like Splattercat, he plays a nice variety of indie games and has pretty good opinions. Sifd is good for gameplay because he plays for longer and sometimes throughout multiple videos but the variety is lower. As you start following channels YT will recommend similar stuff and then you can check it out to see if it's worth following. Some channels focus more on roguelikes, others on incremental/factory games, etc.

Since you're making a niche game, I'd just make a list of similar games or games in the same genre and then search through it on YT and make a list of channels that played those games but aren't "main" channels (the channel is built on only playing 1 game), you want to exclude those because it's unlikely they'll play yours.
