Iron Maiden Killers live 1980(Paul Di'Anno)

Paul Di’Anno (Iron Maiden) died on October 21, 2024

Paul was the singer of the British heavy metal institution Iron Maiden until the 1981 album Killers. Their founder Steve Harris recruited Paul in 1978, who had previously sung in lesser-known rock and punk bands.
In 1981 Paul was 'fired' and replaced by Bruce Dickinson. There were supposedly problems with his vocal cords, but serious alcohol and drug abuse were also mentioned.

Di'Anno then played in a number of bands (Killers, Gogmagog, Battlezone, The Almighty Inbredz, Architects Of Chaoz) and under his own name, but was never able to repeat the success he had with the 'Iron Maiden'.

Paul was not an easy person to deal with; he never let anyone stop him from speaking out and if something rubbed him the wrong way, he didn't just swallow it. Paul, whom colleague and metalhead Jens describes in his review of The Best Arises as a "metal veteran" and "'bad guy' in metal", is right when he chiseled the following sentence to the problems between Paul and Steve. "When you play with Maiden, you have to be aware that Harris is the absolute ruler."

Despite serious health problems, Paul planned to write one more album and play one last tour in selected locations. Locations with ramps, because Di'Anno was in a wheelchair.

Paul Di'Anno died on October 21, 2024 in his house in Salisbury at the age of 66.

My first proper gig. Maiden's first tour. 1980, Middlesbrough Town Hall. Ticket was £2.40 iirc.
Blew me away. Wish I'd kept the ticket and programme.

Saw him 6 or 7 years later with his new band in Loughborough. Don't really remember much about the music because a few songs in a fight broke out in the toilets and quickly spilled out into the crowd. No idea what it was about but I do remember more blood than I've ever seen at a gig before or since. So a memorable one but not for the right reasons.
