Oh yea it's definitely OG, you only had like 2 applications back then I think it was obly Logic for a while.

True, one application over the other will always be your bread and butter per say. You learned on it and you know your way around it for sure.

 

No, Logic came from Atari and Mac to PC in 1994, still on Windows 3.11 and only MIDI, audio support started a bit later. Then Apple bought Emagic in 2002 and stopped supporting Windows, Atari was gone long ago. So you had to choose between switching to another DAW (we still called it "sequencer" back then) or buy a Mac.

 

Ah I see, I was like whattt no way Apple Logic is on Windows?!? I get it now, when you say Atari that wasnt the game sysem was it?

 

Thank you for mentioning 360. I always have a SSL Channelstrip Native and SSL Bus Comp 2 as part of my project template and I never knew I was missing out on this, thought I needed to own an SSL controller to use the 360 app.

with Bitwig this driver works for me

best, I've struggled with the transport controls(in the DAW integration), this one works flawlesly

FL is worth the money trust me

 

Another Bitwig user, clicked with it immediately on v1 and slowly moved to it entirely from Logic, so I'm fairly biased, but still whatever works for one, they pretty much do the same thing more or less at the end of the day. Think it's fairly easy to use it on basic level, to get the stuff done and of course one can dive deep into modular capabilities, I'm sincerely not using much of stock plugins or rely on those features, still perfectly workable and enjoyable piece of software.

 

Started with FL Studio in 2007 and it immediately clicked with me. I really haven't looked back since.
The way it's laid out just makes sense to me and lets me get ideas out very quick with it's great piano roll and mixer workflow.
It works with all genres of music really. It's also great for recording guitars. It may not be a professional recording DAW but I have absolutely no complaints. I have tried a few other DAWs out of curiosity, but feature-wise there really isn't anything for me that FL doesn't have and they're much less straightforward. At this point, I pretty much know it's the only DAW I'll ever use, so I don't even waste my time trying out others.

 

Started with Cubase back in the Atari ST days and stuck with it till Cubase 10 Pro

Moved over to Studio One, which I still really like

About 18 months ago moved over to Bitwig Studio which I just love for the most part and this is now my go-to DAW

Tried Ableton - I just don't get it, and it's definitely a me issue not a DAW issue, stuff just doesn't work for me the way I see it working in videos, frustrates the hell out of me.

Have FL Studio, there is something quite special about this DAW, although I don't use it that much I still have it installed, and you get lifetime updates which is excellent especially in this day and age.

I have Reason 12 never upgraded to 13 which I just use for a few sounds using the VST plugin.

Renoise now this DAW I love for my 8bit Mod Tracker type music, totally different way of working from the traditional DAW but coming from an Amiga it's so familiar and a very capable DAW.

 

15 Years with Cubase (started also with an Atari ST and some synth hardware), some years with Fruity Loops/FL Studio and then and now Bitwig. I love the simplicity GUI with this massive modular under the hood and the modulators for everything.
Also for me Ableton Link support as a game changer. Sure, VST System Link works also but then limited to Steinborg products.The community on Discord is great and very helpful.
I can produce with a straight focus complete songs or jamming with friends (here comes Ableton Link also) or go deep for hours in sound explorations. For me Bitwig is pure fun and not a medical product like Ableton, Studio One or NI Massive X without any soul.

our biased point of view:
nowadays computers are fast enough so differences between DAWs are rather minor,
if you haven't been on track past 15 years, don't expect new FL be like old FL, you'd be basically exploring new, no matter which DAW you pick,
depending on what kind of production you wanna do, Ableton Bitwig and FL have most virtual instruments bloat to drown in,
ProTools are outdated only used by people too lazy to evolve (mostly TV, film..), popularity keeps dropping and prices keep rising, subscriptions (=extortions) are ridiculous,
Cubase and Nuendo are holding professional market where ProTools pissed people off too much, good compromise when it comes to features vs. bloat,
Presonus Studio One is also jumping onto similar subscription fuckery like ProTools, but it's also a decent feature set to compete with PT and Cubase,
Cakewalk Sonar (now Bandlab) has been resurrected multiple times (sold, bought, sold, bought), Cakewalk as company is long dead,
SoundForge and Vegas were sold to Magix, which already has Samplitude and Sequoia, Magix is in insolvency tho, I wouldn't expect much innovantions or lifespan long-term,
Reaper is hands down best DAW (yea I'm biased), being most reliable, least resource heavy, and offers widest range of compatibility - but it`s not perfect - it lacks virtual instruments, so I'm afraid not ideal for your specific use case (unless you're willing to restart your plugin hoarding obsession wasting time and disk space on third-party intruments and plugins), and also being developed by literally two people it may stop development anytime

 

I didn't even know DAW was a thing until 4 years ago.
Eventually, I did online research on the best DAW. But I came away thoroughly confused. However, my choices narrowed to Ableton Live and FL Studio. During my research, it seemed that FL Studio opened more windows than Ableton Live. I may have imagined it. But I want to open as few windows as possible. So, I got Ableton. Also, I like Ableton's DOUR look.

 

Charging for minor things like a mixer on the bottom screen is downright greedy the Gui of 12 is shit I like 10 it just looks simpler and less complicated 12 they shoved so much shit on the screen I will just use 10 for the rest of my life since I own a windows pc anyways backwards compatability will always mean I can run it anyways lol and all versions of max 4 live will work too sure some devices won't be compatible but I have tools I like that work the only downsides I can see are the latest packs won't be compatible with the older version your on other than that 10 is very easy on cpu and honestly the older versions should be Free nobody should be forced to have a license to use it that's dumb

I use Reaper. If everything were free (I guess when you have the sister site, it somewhat is..), I might have chosen Cubase though. I actually was on Cubase prior to Reaper, and was paying for it, but I got tired of how their licensing works. Reaper, on the other hand.. they are fucking amazing. I happily pay for Reaper because you get the full program for only 60USD, and that license lasts for the version you purchase it for, plus one more full version. That's unparalleled, as far as I know. You could even use it for free for life, with a little nag screen, although of course that is against the ToS... but you can still do it.

And, the thing is, Reaper does everything that any other DAW does, and sometimes more. Some DAWs impose various limitations unless you buy a much more expensive license. $60USD (or free).. everything.

The reason why I might chose Cubase over Reaper, if it were fully free is I found Cubase a little easier to use for my MIDI workflow, but I've gotten used to Reaper. Some of the things for me that were initially confusing (like routing) end up being quite powerful once you figure it out. I'm not sure I'd use anything other than Reaper now.. but again, if I did, probably Cubase.

Reaper is also updated very, very regularly (including early releases, if you want to try them).. and unlike other DAWs, they don't make every effort to try and force them into a meaningless higher version number that you need to now pay for. They do the opposite.. they drag out major release versions for as long as they can, so your money goes a long way.

Another feather in the cap for Reaper is it has an incredibly strong, helpful community. Very good forum. Plus it has Kenny Gioia.. anyone who uses Reaper knows who this is. He makes a tutorial video for pretty much anything you want to do. So, if you're unsure how to do anything in Reaper, there's generally a Kenny Gioia video for that.
